One of the most notorious midnight movies of all time, Pink Flamingos follows trailer park dweller Babs Johnson (Divine) and her loyal entourage as they feud with sinister suburbanites Connie and Raymond Marble for the title of “the filthiest people alive.” Bursting with transgressive, bizarre, and shockingly explicit scenes, Pink Flamingos pushes the boundaries of taste and decency. A landmark of underground cinema, it continues to stun even the most jaded viewers. Watch it—if you dare. [108 min; comedy; English]

Taking place in a Mayan village at the base of an active volcano, “Ixcabul” centers on Maria and her family who live and work at a coffee plantation. The film opens with an engagement ceremony between Maria and the plantation foreman, Ignacio. Director Jayro Bustamante sought to challenge the reputation of French as a law status language in Guatamala by filming completely in Kaqchikel.
The screening will be preceded by IU PhD student K. Ermalinda García. Their research centers the lives and organizing practices of women in the L(G)BT community in Mexico City throughout the 20th century.
Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month—September 15 through October 15—every Saturday evening will feature a powerful feature-length film, a short lecture from a graduate scholar or recent Ph.D. graduate, and an open discussion where everyone is welcome to share their thoughts.

Illusion of Safety has been helmed by Daniel Burke since 1983. While it’s membership and sonic palette have changed many times, the focus and feeling have remained fairly constant. The project has been reinvigorated in recent years, releasing many new and archival recordings and performing with greater regularity. In this phase of IoS, Burke is unbound by sonic limitations, utilizing any appropriate sound – found or instigated – to provoke feelings of unease and anxiety which are hypnotic in effect.

Ted Leo is one of the finest songwriters of our generation, even if it’s not entirely clear what generation that is. Starting in New York Hardcore with Citizen’s Arrest, making the ‘90s safe for power-pop and Weller-esque hair with Chisel, then singing our turbulent lives like we were smarter than we were with The Pharmacists, and most recently providing equal parts sweetness and solace with Aimee Mann as The Both, Ted never let us down. And now, seven years after The Brutalist Bricks, he has a new solo album. And it’s wonderful.
The songs on The Hanged Man, recorded at a home-studio-in-transition in Wakefield, RI, with Ted playing almost all the instruments, are some of the finest and most finely wrought of Ted Leo’s career. Ted describes the time working on the album as one of “personal desolation that felt fallow but was actually very fertile” and, indeed, lyrically, The Hanged Man is suffused with hope of sorts but crushingly heavy. The concerns addressed, whether personal trauma or the national disaster we’re all currently existing in, matched with the range and vitality of the songcraft is inspiring, even uplifting.

Likened to a soft summer rain, she’s green is a Minneapolis-based dream-inducer composed of vocalist Zofia Smith, guitarists Liam Armstrong and Raines Lucas, bassist Teddy Nordvold, and drummer Kevin Seebeck. The band has played many shows throughout the Midwest and East Coast, sharing bills with acts such as Hotline TNT, Glixen, Friko, and more. The Star Tribune recommends bringing “earplugs and maybe a tissue for their set.” They initially received recognition through their first two released singles, “river” and “smile again”, both recorded and mixed at home. A raw emotional intensity shines through their honest and explorative songwriting process. After the release of their debut EP Wisteria, they were named one of First Avenue’s Best New Bands of 2023. Sergei Eisenstein, one of the most important figures in cinema history, spent much of his career working devotedly on film projects (by some counts more than thirty) that were, for various reasons, never completed. Acutely aware of his orientation toward the unfinished, a filmmaker who regularly failed to make his films, Eisenstein saw these labors in the realm of the unrealized as an intrinsic stage of the creative process: the productive meeting place of theory and practice, of the ideal and the real. This talk will examine the director’s unrealized 1930–31 Mexican film—the most notorious of these unrealized projects, and the one for which we have the most available filmed footage—in the light of his larger unrealized body of work in order both to better understand the ambiguities of the project within Eisenstein’s full creative biography and to suggest how the film may be seen as a key indicator of cinema’s capacity for and categorical dependence on the unfinished.
Following the lecture, join us at IU Cinema for a screening of shorts of Sergei Eisenstein’s film stock ¡Que viva México!.
