Distinguished Faculty Research Lecture: “The Dancing Jew” in Polish Culture: Between Phantasm and Practice @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Sep 15 @ 3:00 pm

Numerous reports from German-occupied Poland document a peculiar penchant of the Nazi perpetrators to torture Jews by forcing them to perform caricatured dances. These testimonies from World War II survivors and witnesses resonate with an older cultural phenomenon of caricaturizing singing and dancing Jews.

The concept of “the Dancing Jew” has a long and complex history in Polish culture, having originated in representations found in the traditional nativity plays (szopka) and gaining popularity throughout the nineteenth century in lowbrow theater. By the end of the century, it also found its way into Polish- and Yiddish-language literary works.

The lecture draws on untapped archival sources and existing scholarly discourse to contextualize our understanding of the cultural phenomenon of “the Dancing Jew,” focusing on the case study of the ballet Karczma (The Inn).

Hailing from the historically rich city of Charleston, South Carolina, americana music artist Hunter Park is defining what it means to not only live in the modern south, but to be a trans woman and artist within this landscape. Combining folk-infused vocal melodies and evocative lyrics that capture the unfiltered human experience, She Returns From War is taking her seat in the Americana music world with grace, strength, and passion. In 2023, the project showed no signs of slowing down. From opening for Bernie Sanders at his presidential rally in Charleston, to performing at national festivals like Stagecoach and High Water Festival and with artists such as Pat Benatar, Band of Horses, and Nikki Lane, She Returns From War is sharing with the world what the modern south should look and feel like: inclusive, compassionate, unfiltered, and loving.

Nihilistic Easyrider with on being an angel and Damion (18+) @ The Bishop Bar, 123 South Walnut St., Bloomington
Sep 17 @ 9:00 pm

Nihilistic Easyrider is the brainchild of Narrow Head frontman Jacob Duarte—but make no mistake, he’s not going solo. DELUXE EDITION is a mixtape of sorts, a collection of songs written at various intervals throughout Duarte’s career. These songs traverse a wide-range of stylistic references, from saccharine Y2K emo and young-dumb-and-full-of pop punk to Soviet fuzz fueled alt and pure Evan Dando-core verse-chorus-verse-chorus-done pop rock. Brought to life by a cast of characters including Narrow Head drummer Carson Wilcox, producer (and former tour-mate) Graham Hunt and features from Momma’s Allegra Weingarten and Ella Friedman, this debut album still provides with masterfully crafted and hook-drenched renditions of Duarte’s signature songwriting aesthetics.

Warping elements of early Cronenberg, Lynch, and Raimi into a deliriously-paced cyberpunk cocktail, TETSUO is a body horror manifesto that’s fueled by techno-erotic adrenaline and wrought iron perversion. Years later, an intrepid reporter (Christian Bale) tries to find out what happened to Slade, and in the process uncovers the lasting personal and cultural impacts of glam rock’s transcendent moment. Musicology Colloquium Series: The Everyday Life of Recorded Sound @ Simon Music Center room SM344, 200 S. Eagleson Ave, Bloomington
Sep 19 @ 12:45 pm – 1:45 pm

Speaker: Sergio Ospina-Romero, Assistant Professor of Music, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music

The circulation of sound recordings became a matter of everyday life in Latin America and the Caribbean early in the twentieth century. While the imperial operations of Victor, Columbia, Edison, Odeon, and other businesses enhanced transnational networks for the global dissemination of their merchandise, recorded sound also gained cultural currency because of their increasing relevance in all kinds of social spaces. By digging into a variety of scenarios of music consumption and into the contents of sound recordings themselves, this talk examines the uncontrolled circulation of talking machines and records in Latin America and the Caribbean at the time, showing how, ultimately, the very tenets of everyday life became increasingly and inevitably entangled with those of recorded sound.
