Three Pink films: The Pink Panther (1963) w/animated shorts: The Pink Phink and Dial ‘P’ for Pink @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Sep 6 @ 4:00 pm

When a notorious jewel thief known as the Phantom (an impossibly suave David Niven) sets his sights on a princess’ (Claudia Cardinale) priceless pink diamond, it’s up to one man to crack the case: the bumbling French police inspector Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers). The first film to introduce the character of Clouseau to the world, this madcap smash became a pop culture mainstay thanks to its iconic Henry Mancini score, outrageous gags from writer/director Blake Edwards, and a screamingly funny performance from Peter Sellers that has inspired ten additional films. [115 min; comedy; English, Italian, and Greek]

Preceding the film will be two animated shorts directed by the legendary Fritz Freleng and Hawley Pratt, The Pink Phink and Dial ‘P’ for Pink. The very first Pink Panther short and the winner of the 1964 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, The Pink Phink (1964, 6 min) follows the rascally feline as he turns everything a man paints blue into—you guessed it—pink. Dial ‘P’ for Pink (1965, 6 min) finds the panther once again creating chaos when he becomes involved in a criminal’s ruse to rob a safe.

Art and a Movie Series: The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka & the Art of Survival @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Sep 7 @ 1:00 pm

A visually stunning and sweeping feature documentary that traces the life and survival of the renowned painter Tamara de Lempicka through her powerful paintings, from her rise to international stardom in 1920s Paris; to her move to the U.S. in 1940, fleeing the rise of fascism; and her revival in the current art market, collected by the likes of Madonna and Streisand. De Lempicka was marginalized and gained notoriety for her romantic liaisons with her models and her indulgent, decadent lifestyle, but she was so much more. The film, narrated by Hollywood legend Anjelica Huston, follows this remarkable émigrée as de Lempicka reinvents herself multiple times, looking behind the veneer of the publicity she generated for herself and examining the bisexual Jewish artist who embodied talent, resilience, passion, and the relentless pursuit of artistic freedom. Luis Antonio Calvo was one of the most popular and beloved composers in Colombia during the early twentieth century. A celebrity nationwide, his music circulated widely in records, piano rolls, and sheet music; his style, somber at times but all-around enthralling, captivated millions, and, for some, mirrored the very soul of the country. Calvo’s life, however, was bruised by adversity and tragedy. For the first half, economic scarcity was an ominous reality, and for the second, he had to cope with the fateful diagnosis of a sickness tainted with collective imaginaries of dreadfulness and terror: leprosy. This talk will focus on this inexhaustible musician with the purpose of crafting a window—or even a prism—to behold the social and cultural history of Colombia in a new light. The story of Calvo’s life, just like the musical worlds he crafted from the piano, is a unique testimony of the affairs and anxieties of an era otherwise inaccessible.

John Moreland @ Buskirk Chumley Theater, 114 E Kirkwood Ave., Bloomington
Sep 9 @ 7:00 pm

After an impressive 2010s run of albums that earned him a devoted fanbase, accolades from outlets like The New York Times, Fresh Air, and Pitchfork, and a place in the upper echelon of modern Americana singer-songwriters, John Moreland has already taken two unexpected turns this decade, both of which highlight his fierce artistic independence. First, he released a brilliant and sonically layered folk-electronica meditation on modern alienation, 2022’s Birds In The Ceiling, that took some of his fans by surprise. Then, after wrapping up a difficult tour behind that record in November 2022, he stopped working entirely. He took an entire year off from playing shows and didn’t use a smartphone for 6 months. “At the end of that year, I was just like ‘Nobody call me’. I needed to not do anything for a while and just process,” Moreland says. After nearly a decade in the limelight, constantly jostled by the expectations of his audience, the music industry, and anonymous strangers online, he carved out some time to rest, heal, and reflect for the first time.

The result of that unplugged year at home is 2024’s Visitor, a folk-rock record that is intimate, immediate, deeply thoughtful, and catchy as hell. Moreland recorded the album at his home in Bixby, Oklahoma, in only ten days, playing nearly every instrument himself (his wife Pearl Rachinsky sang on one song, and his longtime collaborator John Calvin Abney contributed a guitar solo), as well as engineering and mixing the album. “Simplicity and immediacy felt very important to the process,” he says.

Sep 10 @ 7:00 pm

Doors at 6:30pm This even was made possible, in part, by The Bloomington Arts Commission – 2025 Arts Project Grant. Presented by Cicada Cinema and the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre.
Widely considered one of Slovak animation’s crown jewels, The Bloody Lady is an improbable and bewitching fusion of gothic horror and classic children’s animation, retelling of the infamous Cachtická castle and Báthory folk tale which is often cited as the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Recently treated to haunting live score by celebrated indie musician claire rousay, this underseen gem is a new cult classic in the making.

The Bloody Lady is the centerpiece of Viktor Kubal: Father of Slovak Animation, a retrospective of the landmark Eastern Bloc animator’s pioneering work in much-loved children’s shorts as well as subversive – though no less groundbreaking – feature films.

(Q+film series) The Birdcage @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Sep 11 @ 7:00 pm

Armand (Robin Williams), a gay Miami drag club owner, and his partner/star performer Albert (Nathan Lane) can’t wait to meet Val’s son’s future in-laws. The only problem? The in-laws are a conservative senator and his traditional wife (Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest). For Armand and Albert, there is only one (nonsensical) choice: pretend to be a straight couple for their first visit and hope it all works out. Adapted from the classic French farce La Cage aux Folles, and with a screenplay written by Elaine May, The Birdcage was a smash on its original release and has enchanted audiences ever since.
