From DreamWorks Animation comes a new adaptation of a literary sensation, Peter Brown’s beloved, award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot. The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot—ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling. The Wild Robot stars Academy Award® winner Lupita Nyong’o (Us, The Black Panther franchise) as robot Roz; Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian) as fox Fink; Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek, Best in Show) as opossum Pinktail; Oscar® nominee Bill Nighy (Living, Love Actually) as goose Longneck; Kit Connor (Heartstopper, Rocketman) as gosling Brightbill and Oscar® nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once, this summer’s The Fall Guy) as Vontra, a robot that will intersect with Roz’s life on the island. The film also features the voice talents of Emmy winning pop-culture icon Mark Hamill (Star Wars franchise, The Boy and the Heron), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows, The SpongeBob Movie franchise) and Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible films, Pulp Fiction). A powerful story about the discovery of self, a thrilling examination of the bridge between technology and nature and a moving exploration of what it means to be alive and connected to all living things, The Wild Robot is written and directed by three-time Oscar® nominee Chris Sanders—the writer-director of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch—and is produced by Jeff Hermann (DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby 2: Family Business; co-producer, Kung Fu Panda franchise).

Don’t miss a special solo set from Hiss Golden Messenger, performing the 2010 record “Bad Debt” in its entirety, along with other favorites. Coming to Buskirk Chumley Theater on October 9th. Tickets on sale now.

In 2010, M.C. Taylor—leader, songwriter and singer of Hiss GoldenMessenger—sat down at his kitchen table and started writing and recording the songs that would eventually become his beloved album Bad Debt. At the time, the songwriter was living in a drafty cedar cabin in the woods outside of Pittsboro, North Carolina with his wife and three-month old son Elijah, having recently moved across the country from California. Taylor was, for all intents and purposes, out of the music game.

This month in Discovery Time we are going to explore the natural world! Many studies show that early environmental education benefits children’s emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development. Through a blend of hands-on activities, engaging experiments, and captivating storytelling, children embark on a journey to discover the wonders of the natural world around them. The program curriculum is carefully crafted to align with early childhood development principles while instilling key concepts of environmental science. Tailored for children aged 3 to 6, this program ignites curiosity, fosters a love for nature, and cultivates a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

Hands-on activities include:

  • Singing songs about recycling and conservation
  • Taking a guided nature walk through the WonderGarden
  • Participating in an experiment that demonstrates the concept of water filtration

Writers Guild Spoken Word Series, with April Ridge / Boy Dirt Car / A. S. Coomer (Open Mic to follow) @ Backspace Gallery, inside Bonne Fête, 112 West 6th Street, on the square in Bloomington
Oct 10 @ 6:00 pm
APRIL RIDGE scrawls messages in the night on the clouds that dreams are made of. She whispers sweet nothings to the muses of time and revels in the chance to swim in the deep nothingness of silence, if only to shout ‘Echo’ in it. April prides herself on finding the perfect outfit in which to adorn the skeleton of the soul. She hopes to highlight the needs of poems in danger, on the run, escaping from the need to fit into one form or another, on their way to the freedom of epiphany. You can find her on Facebook, Instagram, a few anthologies and magazines, and other echoing canyons of the internet poetry landscape. “April Ridge can take a Disney movie and weaponize it against an audience. For real, it’s like she has crafted an intricate web that’s just sparkling with jewels.” –Jonathan S Baker, Pure Sleeze Press, publisher of April’s debut chapbook MONSTROUS.
A.S. COOMER is a writer & musician. Books include BIRTH OF A MONSTER, THE FLOCK UNSEEN, MEMORABILIA, THE FETISHISTS, & many others. He runs Lost, Long Gone, Forgotten Records, a “record label” for poetry.
Outlaws, Outsiders, and Artifacts have played a part of BOY DIRT CAR from its inception in 1981, along with the nightmarish chaos and improvisation that has exposed evidence of a decaying culture in 1980’s abandoned soundscapes. These sounds have now been replaced with an artifact that echoes the final vision of destruction of the western world. “An American analogue to Einstürzende Neubauten.”

PRESENTED BY Cicada Cinema & The Buskirk-Chumley Theater

Among the movies being shown during the festival is Possessed, an experimental film made by the deranged filmmaker Lanyard Gates, who killed many people from the audience during its initial showing. And now – a master of disguise is killing again!

Film: HIGH FIDELITY @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Oct 10 @ 7:00 pm

John Cusack is Rob Gordon, the owner of a semi-failing record store located on one of the back streets of Chicago. He sells music the old-fashioned way—on vinyl—with his two wacky clerks, the hysterically funny rock snob Barry (Jack Black in a star turn) and the more quietly opinionated underachiever Dick (Todd Louiso). But Rob’s business isn’t the only thing in his life that’s floundering when his longtime girlfriend Laura walks out on him, forcing him to examine his past failed attempts at romance the only way he knows how. [113 min; romance, comedy; English]
