Dec 3 @ 7:00 pm

Robert Reich, the former U.S. Secretary of Labor, might be famous for his public service, best-selling books, and viral social media posts, but he always considered teaching his true calling. Drawing on his lifetime in politics, he uses his class, “Wealth and Poverty,” to offer us all a deeper look at why inequalities of income and wealth have widened significantly since the late 1970s, and why this poses dangerous risks to our society. Now, after more than 40 years and an extraordinary 40,000 students, Reich is preparing for his last class—confronting the impending finality, and his own aging, with increasing candor, introspection, and, ultimately, emotion. One thousand students fill the biggest lecture hall on the UC Berkeley campus, the last class to receive Reich’s wisdom and exhortations not to accept that the world has to stay the way it is. His belief in the next generation’s ability to take on the fight is inspiring. [71 min; documentary; English]

Mini Trees with Just Penelope and Kay Krull (18+) @ The Bishop Bar, 123 South Walnut St., Bloomington
Dec 4 @ 9:00 pm

Mini Trees is the solo project of LA-based songwriter Lexi Vega, whose intimate blend of indie and alt pop explores the tension between self-doubt and persistence. Her recent singles unravel cycles of disappointment and growth, emotional loops that echo in both personal relationships and her journey through the music industry.

On “Spinning,” Vega captures the quiet dread of chasing something uncertain, singing,“still getting older while I’m going nowhere”, a line that distills the fear of running out of time without anything to show for it. “Close” flips the lens outward, turning frustration into clarity as she confronts an industry that repeatedly says, “you almost would’ve made it. ” And on “Hollow,” she reflects on being the one who pulls away, tracing the aftermath of emotional unavailability with unflinching honesty.

Now working toward her first independently released full-length album, Mini Trees continues to carve out space on her own terms, creating music that lives in the in-between, where doubt and devotion quietly coexist.

Underground Film Series: Images of Asian Music (A Diary from Life 1973-74) + Lodz Symphony @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Dec 5 @ 7:00 pm

Peter Hutton was a prolific experimental filmmaker of landscapes and cities. Like Derek Jarman, his images are often evocative of paintings, but his silent portraits retain a uniquely hypnotic feeling more akin to Nathaniel Dorsky. In color,
his landscapes have an arresting hazy iridescence, and in black and white the images have an organic murkiness. These are not grand images, but rather personal and impressionistic spaces that encourage a contemplative or even
meditative stillness. As a teacher, Hutton inspired many young filmmakers, including Ken Burns. Although he had an impact on modern practice, his films seem to capture life from an older, almost timeless vantage point. In Lodz
Symphony (1993, 20 min), his camera lurks the streets of the namesake Polish town, stealing glimpses of industrial life haunted by its own history. Travel also informs his work, and Hutton’s silent portrait in Images of Asian Music (A Diary from Life 1973-74) (1974, 29 min) is a more celebratory view of life in Thailand while Hutton was working there as a merchant seaman. [49 min total; documentary; silent]

Sourdough & Snacks Workshop & Fundraiser @ Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, 1100 West Allen Street, Bloomington
Dec 6 @ 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm

In the lead up to winter holidays, we are offering a chance to learn or enhance a new skill, enjoy fresh sourdough with snacks that highlight all we’ve made and learned together in workshops over the course of the year, and share highlights from the Hub – all while also joining in our most popular recurring workshop, Sourdough 101. You’ll leave ready to bake fresh bread for your family gatherings and seasonal gifting.

Will it be a fun treat for yourself? An experience to gift a loved one? A sweet first or fiftieth date? We can’t wait to see what you decide!

This is a small, ticketed event giving you a chance to experience a Hub workshop while contributing to our ability to host free, low-barrier workshops for our community. Just 12 tickets are available. Snag yours today.

badknees Holiday Market Experiment + Annual Tradition of the Lighting of the Monolith @ BadkneesTs 902 West Kirkwood Ave, Suite B, Bloomington
Dec 6 @ 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm

We are teaming up with our neighbors, Bloomington Farm Stop, to host our 2nd annual badknees Holiday Market Experiment + Annual Tradition of the Lighting of the Monolith! It is both an indoor and outdoor market! There will be artists selling their wares in both of our spaces. There will hopefully be even more artists outside in the parking lot where the live music will be. There will be beers and hot cocoa and food and propane heaters and giant Jenga and holiday lights and other stuff, too. There will be fun for the kids. There will be fun for adults. The weather will be perfect. Giant, fat snowflakes will begin falling around 7:30 when we light up our historic Monolith and really get into the holiday spirit. It will be just the right amount of snow and we will all agree about that after it stops.
