Janis Ian: Breaking Silence chronicles the life, music, and times of maverick singer-songwriter Janis Ian, beginning with her teen years as a precocious member of the vibrant Greenwich Village folk scene jamming with such legends as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. In the mid-70s, she ascends to international stardom with such hits as “Stars,” about the transient nature of fame (covered by Nina Simone and Cher), and “Jesse,” the wistful lament of a lonely person waiting for their lover to return home (covered to great success by the R&B singer Roberta Flack and Folk icon Joan Baez). With her megahit “At Seventeen,” her masterful take on adolescent pain and alienation, Ian cements her place as a voice for outsiders everywhere. In the 1980s, beset by financial difficulties, Ian moves to Nashville and reinvents herself as primarily a songwriter, collaborating and falling in love with the great songwriter Kye Fleming. With the release of her album “Breaking Silence,” she begins to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

Jeffrey Franken, a med school dropout with a proclivity for bizarre experiments, just lost his fiancée, Elizabeth Shelley, to a tragic lawnmower accident. Our heartbroken protagonist comes to terms with his loss in the only way that makes sense… bringing her back to life! Cobbling body parts together from New York’s ladies of the night, Jeffrey reanimates Elizabeth, but she’s born again with not only a new body but a brand-new attitude and a chip on her shoulder!
Leading a phenomenal cast, including Val Kilmer as the iconic Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Kelly McGillis, Anthony “Goose” Edwards, Meg Ryan, and Tom Skerritt, Tom Cruise soars as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, the young, in-your-face fighter pilot with a need for speed, a lot to prove, and even more to learn. Top Gun takes a look at the danger and excitement that awaits every pilot at the Navy’s prestigious fighter weapons school. Cruise is superb as Maverick, who’s out to become the best of the best. But you can’t be the best unless you compete amongst the best, which is exactly what Kilmer’s “Iceman” intends to show him, thereby creating one of the great cinematic rivalries of the 20th century. Each comedian is asked to do no more than five minutes of completely original material. While we do not care about foul language in your set, we do not allow racist, homophobic, transphobic or rape/female bashing jokes. If you have to ask if it’s racist, homophobic, transphobic or a rape joke, it probably is.
Comedians that wish to participate are asked to e-mail [email protected]. Newcomers and any participants who are not paid professionals will be required to bring audience members to see them. This is non-negotiable. So if you plan on signing up, be sure to invite as many friends as you can. Good luck!

Cuadecuc, Vampir is a visually stunning experimental documentary about the making of Jess Franco’s Count Dracula (which stars Christopher Lee as the Count)—but it’s also much more than that. A dreamy, atmospheric vampire tale in its own right, it combines supernatural imagery with candid footage of stars and clips showing how special effects were achieved. Bleeding Skull says it looks like an episode of Dark Shadows directed by a Czech New Wave filmmaker. In other words, perfect viewing for a cool October night. The event will feature a full-length screening of the beloved movie accompanied by live performances of a unique on-stage musical ensemble of top Hollywood studio musicians, including Polynesian rhythm masters and vocalists, celebrating the music and songs from this award-winning Walt Disney Animation Studios’ classic.
The ensemble is built around rhythm. Of the seven members, five are percussionists (one, Kai Kalama, on a dedicated drum kit), joined by woodwind player Lester Paredes and guitarists Vaea A’etonu and Ryan Keau Kalama. The arrangement highlights Moana’s roots in Pacific Island music, giving the performance an earthy, pulsating energy. The band is even given a showcase of its own with an extended performance of “Logo Te Pate,” complete with solos that spotlight each member’s talent.
With no conductor, vocalist Nina Sosefina anchors the evening, introducing the program and explaining its structure. She handles many of the traditional chants, such as “Tulou Tagaloa,” and closes the night with a rousing encore of the end-credit pop version of “How Far I’ll Go.”
A zany twist on Bram Stoker’s classic. With bumbling heroes, a quirky Van Helsing, and a hilariously foiled Count Dracula, this Monty Python-meets-Lucille Ball romp blends spooky thrills with laugh-out-loud fun and the sultry charm of Elvis Presley—perfect for Halloween!

Before Stranger Things combined sci-fi, Spielbergian themes, and ’80s nostalgia Richard Kelly set the the high-water mark with his debut feature, Donnie Darko and unleashed the first cult classic of the new millennium. Donnie is a troubled high school student: in therapy, prone to sleepwalking, and beset by an imaginary friend (a six-foot rabbit named Frank) who tells him the world is going to end. Donnie has just 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds to navigate teenage life, narrowly avoid death, follow Frank’s maladjusted instructions, and try to maintain the space-time continuum. Donnie Darko combines an eye-catching, eclectic cast—pre-stardom Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, heartthrob Patrick Swayze, former child star Drew Barrymore, Oscar nominees Mary McDonnell and Katharine Ross, and television favorite Noah Wyle—and an evocative soundtrack of ’80s classics by Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears, and Duran Duran. Synopsis: How to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s indescribable 1977 movie House (Hausu)? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions, all realized by Obayashi via mattes, animation, and collage effects. Equally absurd and nightmarish, House might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet. Never before available on home video in the United States, it’s one of the most exciting cult discoveries in years.
