*** Janis Ian will be in attendance, in person, for a Q&A session after the film ***
Janis Ian: Breaking Silence chronicles the life, music, and times of maverick singer-songwriter Janis Ian, beginning with her teen years as a precocious member of the vibrant Greenwich Village folk scene jamming with such legends as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. In the mid-70s, she ascends to international stardom with such hits as “Stars,” about the transient nature of fame (covered by Nina Simone and Cher), and “Jesse,” the wistful lament of a lonely person waiting for their lover to return home (covered to great success by the R&B singer Roberta Flack and Folk icon Joan Baez). With her megahit “At Seventeen,” her masterful take on adolescent pain and alienation, Ian cements her place as a voice for outsiders everywhere. In the 1980s, beset by financial difficulties, Ian moves to Nashville and reinvents herself as primarily a songwriter, collaborating and falling in love with the great songwriter Kye Fleming. With the release of her album “Breaking Silence,” she begins to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

Film: TOP GUN @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Oct 23 @ 7:00 pm

Leading a phenomenal cast, including Val Kilmer as the iconic Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Kelly McGillis, Anthony “Goose” Edwards, Meg Ryan, and Tom Skerritt, Tom Cruise soars as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, the young, in-your-face fighter pilot with a need for speed, a lot to prove, and even more to learn. Top Gun takes a look at the danger and excitement that awaits every pilot at the Navy’s prestigious fighter weapons school. Cruise is superb as Maverick, who’s out to become the best of the best. But you can’t be the best unless you compete amongst the best, which is exactly what Kilmer’s “Iceman” intends to show him, thereby creating one of the great cinematic rivalries of the 20th century. Oct 24 @ 7:00 pm

Cuadecuc, Vampir is a visually stunning experimental documentary about the making of Jess Franco’s Count Dracula (which stars Christopher Lee as the Count)—but it’s also much more than that. A dreamy, atmospheric vampire tale in its own right, it combines supernatural imagery with candid footage of stars and clips showing how special effects were achieved. Bleeding Skull says it looks like an episode of Dark Shadows directed by a Czech New Wave filmmaker. In other words, perfect viewing for a cool October night. Disney’s Moana Live-to-Film Concert @ IU Auditorium, 1211 East 7th St., Bloomington
Oct 24 @ 7:30 pm

The event will feature a full-length screening of the beloved movie accompanied by live performances of a unique on-stage musical ensemble of top Hollywood studio musicians, including Polynesian rhythm masters and vocalists, celebrating the music and songs from this award-winning Walt Disney Animation Studios’ classic.

The ensemble is built around rhythm. Of the seven members, five are percussionists (one, Kai Kalama, on a dedicated drum kit), joined by woodwind player Lester Paredes and guitarists Vaea A’etonu and Ryan Keau Kalama. The arrangement highlights Moana’s roots in Pacific Island music, giving the performance an earthy, pulsating energy. The band is even given a showcase of its own with an extended performance of “Logo Te Pate,” complete with solos that spotlight each member’s talent.

With no conductor, vocalist Nina Sosefina anchors the evening, introducing the program and explaining its structure. She handles many of the traditional chants, such as “Tulou Tagaloa,” and closes the night with a rousing encore of the end-credit pop version of “How Far I’ll Go.”

Friday Night Frights Series: DONNIE DARKO @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Oct 24 @ 10:00 pm

Before Stranger Things combined sci-fi, Spielbergian themes, and ’80s nostalgia Richard Kelly set the the high-water mark with his debut feature, Donnie Darko and unleashed the first cult classic of the new millennium. Donnie is a troubled high school student: in therapy, prone to sleepwalking, and beset by an imaginary friend (a six-foot rabbit named Frank) who tells him the world is going to end. Donnie has just 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds to navigate teenage life, narrowly avoid death, follow Frank’s maladjusted instructions, and try to maintain the space-time continuum. Donnie Darko combines an eye-catching, eclectic cast—pre-stardom Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, heartthrob Patrick Swayze, former child star Drew Barrymore, Oscar nominees Mary McDonnell and Katharine Ross, and television favorite Noah Wyle—and an evocative soundtrack of ’80s classics by Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears, and Duran Duran. The Journey of Women features silver jewelry and textiles created for and worn by Yemeni women, showcasing the meticulous craftmanship of skilled silversmiths and recognizing the role of jewelry as a source of autonomy for women in Yemeni society. These intricate silver pieces play a major role throughout the lives of Yemeni women, following them through the transition from girlhood to womanhood all while preserving their cultural heritage, identity, and lifeways.
Acknowledgments:
IU Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology would like to express their sincere gratitude to their guest curators and community partners Fatima Al Zawya and Najwa Adra, Ph.D, whose contributions and feedback were pivotal in the development of this exhibition.
This exhibition was made possible through the generous donation of the David and Marjorie Ransom Collection of Yemeni Jewelry by Ms. Marjorie Ransom, a former U.S. diplomat to Yemen and author of Silver Treasures from the Land of Sheba: Regional Yemeni Jewelry. Ms. Ransom’s book featuring the Collection is considered the first of its kind to provide a comprehensive look at Yemeni silver jewelry from the different regions of Yemen. Fall Ballet (performances at 2pm & 7:30pm) @ Musical Arts Center, 101 North Eagleson Ave., Bloomington
Oct 25 @ 2:00 pm
Description: Chopiniana
Mikhail Fokine
In 1972, New York City Ballet premiered this version of Mikail Fokine’s Les Sylphides, widely thought to be the first ballet about solely mood and dance. Restaged by Russian-born prima ballerina Alexandra Danilova to the music of Chopin, its sleek and minimalist aesthetic showcases numerous woodland nymphs, or sylphs, dancing in the moonlight.
Allegro Brillante
George Balanchine
Balanchine described this work set to the strains of Tchaikovsky as “Everything I know about ballet in 13 minutes.” The leading bravura role of this joyful piece that challenges the dancers’ technical prowess at every level was created on Maria Tallchief, the first significant American prima ballerina and the first Native American to attain that status.
This Bitter Earth
Christopher Wheeldon
A beautiful and poignant pas de deux from Christopher Wheeldon’s Five Movements, Three Repeats. The music, originally mixed by Robbie Robertson for Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, layers Dinah Washington’s evocative rendition of Clyde Otis’s “This Bitter Earth” over the strings of Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight,” creating a haunting soundscape for the dancers.
World Premiere
Gianna Reisen
Gianna Reisen is the youngest person in history to have been commissioned to choreograph for the storied New York City Ballet. She will bring her unique artistic vision to Jacobs for several weeks to create her latest work, with the students of the IU Ballet Department to music by Johann Strauss II.

In 1917, Lionel (Paul Mescal)—a young, talented music student—meets David (Josh O’Connor) at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over a deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, leading to an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, ensuing love affair, and the music they collect and preserve will shape the course of Lionel’s life far beyond his own awareness. Cicada Cinema: HAUSU @ Upland Brewing Wood Shop, 354 West 11th Street, Bloomington
Oct 25 @ 8:00 pm

Synopsis: How to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s indescribable 1977 movie House (Hausu)? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions, all realized by Obayashi via mattes, animation, and collage effects. Equally absurd and nightmarish, House might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet. Never before available on home video in the United States, it’s one of the most exciting cult discoveries in years.
