Hovvdy with Damion @ The Bishop Bar, 123 South Walnut St., Bloomington
Oct 19 @ 8:00 pm

A self-titled statement piece, Hovvdy’s fifth album fits with the comfortable confidence of faded blue jeans. Underlining years of hyper-reflective, deeply-fan-beloved songwriting, the 19-track sequence draws together swirling piano lines and vivid production under the cohesive vision of longtime friends Charlie Martin and Will Taylor. Hovvdy boldly broadens the scope of the Texas duo’s songwriting in a new partnership with Toronto-based outlet Arts & Crafts. The expansive double album presents a true co-production between Hovvdy and their frequent collaborators, Andrew Sarlo (Bon Iver, Big Thief) and Bennett Littlejohn (bassist, multi-instrumentalist). An unprecedented focus on live takes further peels the band’s early slowcore layers to show dazzling dynamic range, from the country feel of “Portrait” to the bombastic drums of “Meant.” Never staying still too long, Hovvdy easily folds introspection into their big, fearless choruses. Always guided with a gentle hand, the listener lands right there in the room, to witness the spontaneous synchronicity of Charlie and Will’s shared songcraft.

Oct 23 @ 7:00 pm

*** Janis Ian will be in attendance, in person, for a Q&A session after the film ***
Janis Ian: Breaking Silence chronicles the life, music, and times of maverick singer-songwriter Janis Ian, beginning with her teen years as a precocious member of the vibrant Greenwich Village folk scene jamming with such legends as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. In the mid-70s, she ascends to international stardom with such hits as “Stars,” about the transient nature of fame (covered by Nina Simone and Cher), and “Jesse,” the wistful lament of a lonely person waiting for their lover to return home (covered to great success by the R&B singer Roberta Flack and Folk icon Joan Baez). With her megahit “At Seventeen,” her masterful take on adolescent pain and alienation, Ian cements her place as a voice for outsiders everywhere. In the 1980s, beset by financial difficulties, Ian moves to Nashville and reinvents herself as primarily a songwriter, collaborating and falling in love with the great songwriter Kye Fleming. With the release of her album “Breaking Silence,” she begins to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

Top Gun takes a look at the danger and excitement that awaits every pilot at the Navy’s prestigious fighter weapons school. Cruise is superb as Maverick, who’s out to become the best of the best. But you can’t be the best unless you compete amongst the best, which is exactly what Kilmer’s “Iceman” intends to show him, thereby creating one of the great cinematic rivalries of the 20th century. Oct 23 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Comedy Open-Mic Night @ The Comedy Attic, upstairs at 123 South Walnut, Bloomington, the corner of Walnut and 4th Street
Oct 23 @ 8:00 pm

Each comedian is asked to do no more than five minutes of completely original material. While we do not care about foul language in your set, we do not allow racist, homophobic, transphobic or rape/female bashing jokes. If you have to ask if it’s racist, homophobic, transphobic or a rape joke, it probably is.

Comedians that wish to participate are asked to e-mail [email protected]. Newcomers and any participants who are not paid professionals will be required to bring audience members to see them. This is non-negotiable. So if you plan on signing up, be sure to invite as many friends as you can. Good luck!

Additional Films and Guests Series: Cuadecuc, Vampir @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Oct 24 @ 7:00 pm

Cuadecuc, Vampir is a visually stunning experimental documentary about the making of Jess Franco’s Count Dracula (which stars Christopher Lee as the Count)—but it’s also much more than that. A dreamy, atmospheric vampire tale in its own right, it combines supernatural imagery with candid footage of stars and clips showing how special effects were achieved. Bleeding Skull says it looks like an episode of Dark Shadows directed by a Czech New Wave filmmaker. In other words, perfect viewing for a cool October night. [75 min; documentary, horror; English and Spanish]
