Come for the grammar. Stay for the humanity.
Q&A with Brandt and Ellen to follow the film.

One fall day in 2018, Ellen Jovin set up a folding table on a Manhattan sidewalk with a sign that said “Grammar Table.”
Right away, passersby began excitedly asking questions, telling stories, and filing complaints.

What happened next is the stuff of grammar legend.

Ellen and her filmmaker husband, Brandt Johnson, took the table on the road, visiting all 50 US states as Brandt shot the grammar action. People from every imaginable background visited the table to share a laugh, settle disputes, and talk about their grammar insecurities. These conversations took place in small towns and big cities, by bookstores and coffee shops, on beaches and mountainsides.

But this story transcends grammar. It’s the story of an epic quest to bring us all closer together. In a time of social and political division, the Grammar Table is a place of unity and connection. The conversations at the table help answer the question “How can we all get along?

Opera Insights – Pre-show talk on Georges Bizet’s “Carmen” @ Musical Arts Center North Lobby, 101 North Eagleson Ave., Bloomington
Apr 18 @ 6:30 pm

In 1875, critics panned Bizet’s now-indisputable masterpiece, and audiences were shocked by its frankness.

Though Bizet would die without realizing his work would become one of the most famous and beloved operas of all time, he was sure of its import for him. As he finished the piece, he wrote to a friend that he had “absolute certainty of having found my path.”

The dynamic and fiercely independent Carmen has become a feminist icon; she lived a passionate and self-directed life on her own terms, owing nothing to any man. But patriarchy will inevitably punish such freedom, in often extreme ways. Carmen eventually knew that—and even she could not escape.

ZANA: Women of the Little 500 2024 (22 mins) with a Pre-Film Q&A with filmaker Grace Williams!

“ZANA” chronicles the remarkable story of Melanzana, a women’s cycling team with a storied history in the Women’s Little 500 at Indiana University. Through a lens both personal and poignant, the film captures Zana’s pursuit of a historic three-peat victory while exploring the broader themes of gender equality and female empowerment within the traditionally male-dominated world of competitive cycling.

The film is the brainchild of Grace Williams, who made waves as a member of Zana during their first historic win in 2022, and Emily Segura Maze, who has deep-rooted connections to the cycling world. Their paths crossed during a college film internship, leading to a shared vision of using their unique perspectives to elevate women’s voices in both cycling and media.
