The reach of David Lynch into the popular and cinematic imagination is impossible to overstate. We honor his work, his legacy, his influence, and his paradoxical creation with a free, multi-film marathon. Come and go as you please, discover a Lynch film you’ve not seen before, or revisit a treasured favorite. No tickets required, just an open mind and blue skies and sunshine all along the way.
*Note: film start times are estimates
10am: The Short Films of David Lynch [65 min; NR] — 2K digital restorations of six short films by Lynch: Six Men Getting Sick (1967), The Alphabet (1968), The Grandmother (1970), The Amputee, Version 1 and Version 2 (1974), and Premonitions Following an Evil Deed (1995).
11:15am: Blue Velvet [1986, 121 min, R] — There’s something going on behind the white picket fences of Lumberton, USA. And after finding a severed human ear in a field, mystery-loving college student Jeffrey (Kyle MacLachlan) is determined to find out what. Teaming up with the daughter of a local police detective (Laura Dern), Jeffrey’s investigation leads him into a strange world of sensuality, violence, and the relationship between a troubled nightclub singer (Isabella Rossellini) and a sociopathic sadomasochist (Dennis Hopper, playing a sadist as only Dennis Hopper could).
1:15pm: The Straight Story [1999, 112 min, G] — Alvin’s (Richard Farnsworth, who was nominated for an Oscar for this performance) eyesight is poor, his cash is low, and he can’t stand the thought of being driven anywhere. When he discovers his estranged brother has suffered a stroke, he makes the journey to see him by the only means of transport available to him: a John Deere lawnmower. Also starring Sissy Spacek.
3:15pm: Eraserhead [1977, 89 min, NR] — Lynch’s 1977 debut is a dream of dark and disturbing things, a lasting cult sensation, and a work of extraordinary craft and beauty. Its mesmerizing black-and-white photography, evocative sound design, and unforgettably enigmatic performance by Jack Nance combine in a visionary nocturnal odyssey.
4:45pm: Mulholland Drive [2001, 147 min, R] — After a car wreck on the winding Mulholland Drive renders a woman (Laura Elena Harring) amnesiac, she and a perky Hollywood-hopeful (Naomi Watts) search for clues and answers across Los Angeles in a twisting venture beyond dreams and reality. Also starring Justin Theroux, Robert Forster, and Michael J. Anderson.
7:15pm: Wild at Heart [1990, 125 min, R] — Sailor (Nicolas Cage) and Lula (Laura Dern) are two lovers struggling to remain together even when fate seems intent on keeping them apart. But here, fate is Lula’s mother, Marietta (Diane Ladd), a desperate woman who hates Sailor and will do anything to keep him away from her daughter. Sailor and Lula escape on a sex-filled, rocking road trip, aware all the time that they are being hunted by Marietta’s cronies, including Bobby Peru (an unhinged Willem Dafoe).
9:30pm: Lost Highway [1997, 134 min, R] — A mesmerizing meditation on the mysterious nature of identity: anonymous videotapes presage a musician’s (Bill Pullman) conviction for murdering his wife (Patricia Arquette), a gangster’s girlfriend (also played by Arquette) leads a mechanic (Balthazar Getty) astray, and the mysterious man with the white face is somehow connected to it all. Featuring some of Lynch’s most painterly and enigmatic cinematographic compositions.

A special performance by students of the Voice Department in recognition of Black History Month
A striking cinematic vision that weaves through time and space, the film follows Mack, a Black woman in Mississippi, as she experiences the joy, grief, love, and pain that defines the journey from childhood to adulthood. Expertly leveraging the sensation of touch in a way uncommon—and incredibly difficult—in cinema, Jackson creates an ethereal and deeply felt world that is simultaneously unfamiliar and yet instantly recognizable. Co-produced by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk), All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt premiered to rave reviews at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and was named one of the Top 10 Independent Films of 2023 by the National Board of Review. [92 min; drama; English]
The film will be preceded by a recorded talk on experimental film and memory work by Maya Cade, founder, Black Film Archive.

Concert with Rhys Jones and Nokosee Fields – Old Time songs and tunes performed by a top-notch duo.
Rhys Jones is a fiddler extraordinaire. He has won fiddle and band contests at The Appalachian String Band Festival (Clifftop), and is regarded as “one of the bright lights of the current generation of traditional performers.” Having spent much of his childhood in southern West Virginia (where he learned from the older generation of musicians), Rhys is equally at home telling the stories of Appalachian music as he is performing on fiddle, banjo, and guitar.
Nokosee Fields, a member of the Osage, Creek, and Cherokee Nations, is one of the most provocative and capable voices in the North American traditional music scene. A quest for balance shapes his work as he challenges the demands and vacuity of colonialist, capitalist structures and systems with the richness of his experience and upbringing. Nokosee also performs with The Onlies, Hard Drive, and The Nokosee Fields Trio

Join us for a conversation between bestselling romance author Beverly Jenkins and Lilly Library Curator of Modern Books Rebecca Baumann.
As the Lilly Library’s groundbreaking exhibition “Love in the Library: The Romance Novel in English” comes to a close, we are thrilled to welcome bestselling author Beverly Jenkins for a conversation about her career.
Beverly Jenkins is an NAACP Image Award nominee and bestselling author of over 30 historical and contemporary romance novels. Her historical novels, including Indigo (1996), Topaz (1997), and the Women Who Dare series (2019–2022) center Black characters and Black history often overlooked in the romance genre, in American popular culture, and in history classes. Many of her novels are set in the post-Civil War era, a time in which Black Americans were building their lives, their identities, and legacies for generations to come. Jenkins also writes contemporary romances, including the 2021 romantic suspense novella Rare Danger, featuring a rare book dealer as heroine.
Itinerary (please RSVP at https://go.iu.edu/8rUR)

WESTLEY PENLAND was a burp-the-alphabet kid and despite his deviated septum was quite good at it. He first discovered writing as an escape from reality, after years of being scolded for being left-handed. Now, he uses it as a cheap form of public therapy, but that’s health care, Baby. His work can be found in his debut chapbook “Confirmation of Life” published by Alien Bhudda Press, “Trans*Citizens Project” by {New} Word Press, and in the anthologies “October Stories”, “Rebirth”, and “Stormwash: Environmental Poems, vol 2.” He enjoys antiquing, cooking, traveling, and spending time with his two pups.
TYLER FREDERICK is a spoken word poet from Bloomington, IN who regularly performs at poetry slams and various open mics around the state. He was recently appointed as treasurer for the Writer’s Guild at Bloomington. His work has been published in “What is in John’s Basement,” “October Stories,” and “Rebirth.”
JASON HATHAWAY is an eager preservationist of American roots music, often performing his own versions of old public domain blues, folk, and country songs recorded some 50 years before he was even born. Carried on the wings of Hathaway’s deep, resonant voice and soothing guitar, these songs take the listener on a trip back in time, dredging up memories of Grandma and Grandpa’s big old Philco radio or rifling through their collection of 78 rpm records. No matter the age or musical taste of audience members, this guy always manages to have a little something for everybody to keep a smile on their faces and have their legs twitching to the beat.
All Ages | Czech Republic • dir. Ester Krumbachová
Synopsis: Dissatisfied with single life and eyeing marriage, an unnamed fortysomething bachelorette (Jirina Bohdalová) decides to rekindle a relationship with her old childhood friend (Vladimír Mensík). But when he arrives for an elaborately prepared dinner rendezvous, her suitor reveals himself to be a boorish, arrogant glutton. Undeterred, she pushes herself to increasingly absurd and surreal ends in romancing this nightmare date… who may just be the devil himself.
The sole directorial outing from legendary Czechoslovak New Wave costume designer and writer Ester Krumbachová (Daisies, Witchhammer, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders), Murdering the Devil is feast for the senses, pushing Krumbachová’s signature production style to dizzying and sumptuous heights. Boasting all the makings of an uproariously funny New Wave classic in 1969, the film’s potential was quickly hamstrung by Eastern Bloc censorship. Half a century later, this prescient skewering of rom-com conventions has been beautifully restored in 4K by the Czech Film Archive and is finally ready to meet the audience it’s always deserved.
Bringing you Roots, Folk, Blues & Americana from the best of Brown County and beyond.
Set in France in 1889, the film follows the life of Dodin Bouffant (Benoît Magimel) as a chef living with his personal cook and lover Eugénie (Juliette Binoche). They share a long history of gastronomy and love, but Eugénie refuses to marry Dodin, so the food lover decides to do something he has never done before: cook for her. [135 min; drama, history, romance; French with English subtitles]
