In his follow-up to the Oscar-winning The English Patient, writer/director Anthony Minghella tried his hand at another tricky literary adaptation with The Talented Mr. Ripley, featuring ’90s heartthrob Matt Damon cast against type as a bisexual murderer. A bright and charismatic sociopath making his way in mid-1950s NYC through menial work and petty scams, Tom Ripley is hired through a case of mistaken identity by a shipping magnate to bring back his loafing son, Dickie (Jude Law), from a too-long extended Italian vacation with his girlfriend, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow). Tom soon finds that he’d rather be Dickie than bring him home and makes an impulsive decision with no return. The three enigmatic leads are buoyed by indelible supporting performances from Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman. [

Film: THE RULES OF THE GAME @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
May 18 @ 4:00 pm

Considered one of the greatest films ever made, The Rules of the Game (La règle du jeu) by Jean Renoir is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners in which a weekend at a marquis’ country château lays bare some ugly truths about a group of haut bourgeois acquaintances. The film has had a tumultuous history: it was subjected to cuts after the violent response of the premiere audience in 1939, and the original negative was destroyed during World War II and wasn’t reconstructed until 1959. That version, which has stunned viewers for decades, is presented here in a gorgeous new 4K restoration.

Roger Salloom, with the Living Rumors @ The Pink Poodle House Venue, 917 North Fairview St, Bloomington
May 18 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Roger was the subject of the 6 award-winning feature film documentary, So Glad I Made It, the Saga of Roger Salloom, America’s Best Unknown Songwriter which broadcast on The Documentary Channel monthly for a year and was screened in 36 theaters, and some additional broadcast tv stations.
“It is no stretch to call Roger Salloom venerable,…. He writes songs, of course, and they’re well-crafted and intelligent, with a Steely edge of sardonic perspective…. dry flavor and articulate delivery… ok, the sam can be said for his sense of humor…you must become a listener. Which is a mighty fine idea anyway…..his)… performances were my main source for a standard by which I have since formed impressions of a whole lot of artists. Roger gives a performance without putting it on too much, or “putting on a show” as many do- beyond authentic entertainment of the sort that comes from a real person, an individual of sincerity and authenticity. The show rocks a lot.” -Jimm O’Donnell, Live Music News and Reviews

Green Drinks Bloomington is a lively, informal social networking event for people from all
walks of life who are interested in making a greener world. The organization gathers monthly to share
libations and dialogue, explore ideas and make new friends and business connections.

This month’s gathering will hear from Dr. Ben Kravitz, Assistant Professor in the
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Indiana University, for a
presentation entitled “Geoengineering: Can we do it? Should we do it?”. As people get
more desperate about climate change, they may turn to technologies to deliberately cool the
planet. Dr. Kravitz will explore some of the benefits and risks in this talk.
