February 2022: As Russian troops advance on the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, a small crew of Associated Press reporters are trapped amongst the besieged civilian population. 20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL — winner of the 2023 Sundance Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary — is the unflinching visual chronicle of this harrowing ordeal. Ukrainian war correspondent Mstyslav Chernov (he directs, shoots, and narrates) and colleagues are the only international correspondents left in the city, witnesses to the first sighting of a “Z” on a Russian tank (a declaration of war), random shelling, the bombing of a maternity hospital, the digging of mass graves, and Russia’s eventual encirclement of the city. Their images of war crimes would soon go viral, potently exposing Russia’s monstrous lies that deny their targeting of Ukrainian civilians, and earning the AP team two 2023 Pulitzer Prizes: for Public Service Journalism and Breaking News Photography. CICADA CINEMAS UNDERGROUND PRESENTS: YOKAI MONSTERS: SPOOK WARFARE @ Orbit Room, 107 North College Ave Suite 001 (Underground), Bloomington
Sep 28 @ 8:00 pm

Synopsis: From the makers of the DAIMAJIN trilogy comes YOKAI MONSTERS, a hallucinatory series of Theremin-fueled films that combine Kaiju-styled beasties with epic mythological storylines. In YOKAI MONSTERS: SPOOK WARFARE (the second movie in the series), an evil Babylonian vampire is accidentally resurrected by a group of treasure hunters. And it’s up to the Yokai monsters to stop this unholy bloodsucker from destroying the world! Combining the iconic surrealism of HAUSU with monsters that are as adorable as baby Yoda (and as ferocious as Godzilla), SPOOK WARFARE is an unmissable chapter in the Japanese horror-fantasy canon. This movie will give your audiences everything they need, including smiles, joy, and a demon vampire with the ability to clone itself.

*In partnership with The Orbit Room, The American Genre Film Archive and Vulture Video, our Cicada Underground series comes from the ethos that while as imperfect as the people who made them, genre films deserved to be screened to both enrich our lives and have a good time doing it!
