Freedoms Under Assault presented by The Learning Project @ Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave, Bloomington
Nov 15 @ 2:00 pm

Freedoms under Assault is a powerful full-length documentary that chronicles the systematic destruction of a world-class university and the politically motivated culture war against its faculty over a two-year period. A perfect storm of an autocratic university president collaborating with a supermajority reactionary state legislature following the ideological agenda of the White House has effectively curtailed the institutional autonomy of Indiana University as well as shared governance structures, academic freedom, free speech and assembly rights, tenure, and the viability of arts and humanities programs.

The documentary shows the lengths to which a university administration is willing to silence, intimidate, persecute, and even exile faculty members in accord with arbitrary policies and “financial exigencies.” The film is co-directed/produced by Robert Arnove, IU Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus of Education, and award-winning documentarian, Jacky Comforty.

Sweet Pea @ Nashvile House, 15 S Van Buren Street, Nashville
Nov 15 @ 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
“La Bohème” by Giacomo Puccini @ Musical Arts Center, 101 North Eagleson Ave., Bloomington
Nov 15 @ 5:00 pm
The Jacobs School of Music Opera and Ballet Theater presents the opera “La Bohème” by Giacomo Puccini. Based on Henri Murger’s 1851 novel Scenes de la vie de Bohème, Puccini’s fourth opera is one of the world’s most popular and marked his true coming of age as a composer, and the end of his days as a starving artist. With themes so universal that it has successfully moved generations—from its polarizing 1896 premiere in Turin, conducted by the 28-year-old Arturo Toscanini, to inspiring the smash musical Rent on Broadway a century later—La Bohème is part of popular culture.
This story of struggling bohemian artists and their friends, including Mimi and Rodolfo, in Left Bank Paris celebrates the joy, excitement, and carefree abandon of youth, as they dare to live their lives and emotions to the fullest. But even such passion cannot keep tragedy at bay.
Join us an hour before each performance for the Opera Insights Lecture, located in the North Lobby of the Musical Arts Center.

Award winning author, researcher, and lecturer, Raymond Szymanski, had an outstanding forty-year engineering career at the fabled Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB). He is the acknowledged expert on WPAFB and its alien connections. In his first book, Fifty Shades of Greys: Evidence of Extraterrestrial Visitation to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Beyond, Raymond reveals compelling photographic evidence and research that supports long-held rumors of Wright-Patterson’s alien involvement. His 2nd book, Victoria’s Secret Truth, presents an in-depth, convincing, two-year case study for Close Encounters of the 7th Kind that crosses multiple generations of the same family. His most recent book, Swamp Gas My Ass (SGMA), reveals the true exploits of two American heroes who intercepted the famous 1966 Michigan ‘Swamp Gas’ UFO, an interplanetary visitor that government officials tried to explain away as “marsh gas”. This book was featured in The Science Channel series, Mission Unexplained, which aired in June 2023, and has aired on several other prominent cable channels.
If you’d like to purchase one of Raymond’s titles, please bring cash! He is unable to take payment with credit cards at this time.

Each fall, the film tour celebrates the start of the season with the largest gathering of snow enthusiasts.

The film, titled “SNO-CIETY,” is not just about snow—it’s about the tight-knit community, shared rituals, and sense of belonging that come with snow culture. The film explores a world where snow creates its own society, bound together by mountain life, adventure, and seasonal tradition.

“SNO-CIETY” takes viewers on a journey from the Scottish Highlands and the streets of Finland to the back bowls of Whitewater, BC, and a local hill-turned-terrain park in downtown Denver. With a unique, fun, and motivational narrative, the film celebrates both the action and the camaraderie of winter. A diverse lineup of Olympians, urban riders, and local legends including Judd Henkes, Britta Winans, and many more, uncover what drives us to chase powder year after year.

Cicada Cinema: Heartworn Highways @ Blockhouse Bar, located in the alley at 205 South College Avenue, Bloomington
Nov 18 @ 7:00 pm

In the mid-70’s, James Szalapski captured lightning in a bottle, a fleeting moment in music history. Namely, the birth of Outlaw Country Music, heralding a new, close-knit generation of renegade musicians, inspired by Willie and Waylon.

Typically, they gathered at Guy and Susanna Clark’s home in Nashville or at Townes van Zandt’s trailer in Austin, to play each other’s songs deep into the night. Turning their backs on the corporate establishment, they formed a soulful community prizing personal, beaautifully crafted songwriting above all else. Resolute romantic poets, they chose their own path.

Buried for 25 years, Heartworn Highways is now revered as a classic, seminal work that offers a rare, unfiltered look into the lives of the artists who shaped and redefined the genre. As photographed by Szalapski, the camera becomes an unseen guest, roaming casually beyond social borders, bringing us into another world of American roots music exposing its open heart and gritty innocence.

Featuring: Guy Clark, Townes van Zandt, David Allen Coe, Rodney Crowell, Larry Jon Wilson, Steve Young, Gamble Rogers, Charlie Daniels Band, Steve Earle… and their many friends.

Jorgensen Guest Filmmaker Series: ADULT BEST FRIENDS, w/Q & A with filmmaker @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington

Katie and Delaney, inseparable since childhood, find their paths diverging in their 30s. While Katie is happily living with her boyfriend, Delaney is single with a roommate. Despite these differences, their friendship is still a top priority, and they’ve always been the most important person in each other’s lives. That is, until Katie’s boyfriend proposes. To soften the blow, Katie plans a nostalgic trip to their childhood beach town, intending to break the news softly. But the trip takes (many) unexpected turns as Katie and Delaney try to work out what it means to be adult best friends. [120 min; comedy; English]
This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Delaney Buffett, a writer and director from Florida.

Pangaea Sky @ The Lotus Firebay, 105 S. Rogers Street, Bloomington
Nov 18 @ 7:00 pm
In a world where geographical boundaries increasingly blur, the concept of Pangaea—a supercontinent that once connected disparate lands—serves as a fitting metaphor for the music of Pangaea Sky.

Through performances of highly arranged traditional tunes, coupled with original compositions that draw from both folkloric & modern sources, the quartet explores the traditional and contemporary global music scene and emphasizes how global influences and technology are shaping soundscapes and influencing music. Pangaea Sky draws from a global palette, creating hybrid genres that reflect a more interconnected world.
