Queer in the Heartland Series: IN PLAIN SIGHT (2019) @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Nov 4 @ 7:00 pm

This insightful documentary asks how we have come to imagine what life is like for LGBTQ people in rural places—and provides an opportunity to imagine it otherwise.

In Plain Sight challenges “metronormativity” by exploring the lives of LGBTQ+ women in the rural Upper Midwest. This documentary uncovers a surprising reality: contrary to popular stereotypes of rural conservatism, many of these women find safety, support, and happiness in their communities. The film prompts viewers to reconsider preconceived notions about LGBTQ+ experiences outside of urban centers, offering a fresh and uplifting perspective on rural inclusivity. The BCT presents The Hunger Games (2012) @ Buskirk Chumley Theater, 114 E Kirkwood Ave., Bloomington
Nov 4 @ 7:00 pm

THE HUNGER GAMES (2012)
Based on the novel by author Suzanne Collins –

In a dystopian future, the totalitarian nation of Panem is divided into 12 districts and the Capitol. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal retribution for a past rebellion, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors while the citizens of Panem are required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’ young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives.

Nov 4 @ 8:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Caroline Davis’s Portals project is an immersive sound and haptic experience, drawing upon the idea of mourning and ancestral communications as textural entities. The music has been mindfully written to offer connections to Caroline’s ancestors who have transitioned and elements they would have liked to explore through the life-cycle portal. Through the compositions, the ensemble engages in the improvisatory tissue between dual and non-dual realms of existence. The core quartet features Julian Shore, Chris Tordini, and Timothy Angulo, and invited guests on her two Portals albums: Volume 1: Mourning (2021) and Volume 2: Returning (2024).

A spellbinding farewell from Porridge Radio, Pieces Of Heaven was filmed at the Centre Pompidou in 2024 to mark the release of the band’s final album, Clouds In The Sky They Will Always Be There For Me.

Led by songwriter Dana Margolin, it moves through inertia, heartbreak and dysphoria as she distils over a decade of music into one unforgettable hour. Equal parts concert, lullaby and revelation, Pieces Of Heaven is not only an ending, but an unbridled celebration of the void: nothing means anything, and within that is complete freedom to do and feel everything.

The College Arts + Humanities Institute is delighted to announce that Terry Tempest Williams will visit IU Bloomington and appear at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater on November 6 as a Ruth N. Halls Distinguished Speaker.

Terry Tempest Williams has been called “a citizen writer,” a writer who speaks and speaks out eloquently on behalf of an ethical stance toward life. A naturalist and fierce advocate for freedom of speech, she has consistently shown us how environmental issues are social issues that ultimately become matters of justice. “So here is my question,” she asks, “what might a different kind of power look like, feel like, and can power be redistributed equitably even beyond our own species?”

Williams, like her writing, cannot be categorized. She has testified before Congress on women’s health issues, been a guest at the White House, has camped in the remote regions of Utah and Alaska wildernesses and worked as “a barefoot artist” in Rwanda.

Charmaine will examine the prospects and challenges facing anti-imperialist working-class struggle in North America today. Drawing on ten years of scholarship and organizing in and around the logistics sector – through port blockages in the Palestinian solidarity movement and through organizing with an independent union of Amazon warehouse workers – this talk suggests that contemporary “internationalist” thinking remains too wedded to immaterial goals of “consciousness-raising” insufficiently attentive to the concrete challenges of rooting internationalism in grassroots working class movements.

Darlin’ Brando // West Fork Revival // Rikki Jean @ Orbit Room, 107 North College Ave., Suite 001 (downstairs), Bloomington
Nov 7 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Doors at 6pm

7:00 – Rikki Jean
7:30 – Darlin’ Brando
8:30 – West Fork Revival

Darlin’ Brando—the pseudonym of singer, songwriter and drummer, Brandon Goldstein— melds the twang and two-step beats of honky tonk, the wry humor and storytelling of folksy troubadours like Kristofferson, Prine and Miller, and the melodic hooks and surprise twists and turns of golden-era rock ‘n roll to create an exciting and unpredictable brand of country music.
Though raised in Virginia, his music is a product of decades spent moving from city to city, coast to coast. From Los Angeles to Brooklyn to Bloomington, IN to Nashville Tennessee. And then back to LA. All while living and learning the kinds of hard lessons country songs are made of: heartbreak, divorce, substance abuse, the list goes on.
West Fork Revival is a musical collective that blends alternative country, folk, rock, and indie genres. The band was formed in 2024 and is known for its storytelling, melodic craftsmanship, and a sound inspired by artists like Son Volt and The Jayhawks.
Rikki Jean learned the harsh realities of life at a young age, losing her father at age five. Growing up in Southern Mississippi, life was tough for her, two sisters, and widowed mother . Every step of the way seemed to get harder as she cascaded through life. Growing confidence with every failure, Rikki managed to put a band together and has now recorded three albums.
