The Namby Pamby is composed of sisters McKenna and Emily Parks and their longtime friend Payton Knerr. All coming from musical backgrounds, quality time and a passion for their craft ultimately brought the Fort Wayne-based trio together late 2021 before coming to life in their January 2022 live debut.
The sound of this feminine folk phenomenon is emotionally driven, and often defined by nuanced vocals, experimental chords, and jazz-like drumming that orbits arresting lyrics. A shared small town Indiana charm channels into each nearly tangible story, unionizing their individual musicianship and permitting a continuous expansion on their inimitable style.
After charming audiences with their captivating live performances, The Namby Pamby joined forces with all-analog producer Jason Davis at Off the Cuff Recording Studio. Lead singles Chardonnay and Poached Egg resonated with a wide audience of listeners who anticipated their full potential, ultimately satisfied by the group’s November 2022 debut of Marketplace. In all of its warm-hearted nature, the Parks sisters and Knerr have put together a record that is subtle, strikingly vulnerable, and wholly engaging.

The New York Times likened Carll’s ability to undergird humor with a weightier narrative to Bob Dylan. When Carll talks about the sounds that are in his own head, he mentions Randy Travis. That juxtaposition defines the singularity of Carll’s career: He exists in a space of his own, informed by John Prine, Tom Waits, and Dylan but also by Travis, Kenny Rogers, and Hank Williams, Jr. “I like to tug at heartstrings, find commonality with others, reflect on my own life, and sometimes I do it in a lighthearted way,” says Carll. “A lot of musical styles found their way onto this record, but my first and most formative influences came from country music.”
Much like his music, Lund is decidely hard to define. The western Canadian singer-songwriter is an elusive artist — onstage, offstage and in the studio — seamlessly weaving between the outlaw country, Western, and indie-folk realms with an honest curiosity and rowdy devotion to each. Lund has a devoted audience comprised of city dwellers, along with authentic Western music fans still living an agricultural lifestyle; both sects finding elements of their lives reflected within the themes of the music, due to the fact that he toured for years with indie-metal band The Smalls, and later turned his sights to writing Western songs. This has created a unique and quirky hybrid writing style.

A chronicle of the triumphs and failures of four teams competing to win the Little 500, this documentary is a bittersweet portrait of life in the Midwest and the drama from training through race day. At a time when collegiate athletics is navigating an increasingly uncomfortable intersection of profit and competition, the Little 500 remains an example of pure sport in America’s heartland. Through the stories of the individuals who make up the Little 500 community, One Day in April is a testament to the virtue that sports build community and forge kinships rarely savored otherwise. The expansive narrative of friendship, failure, and redemption plays out across a cast of characters that includes experienced veterans, accident-prone rookies, and alumni coaches who treat the Little 500 like it’s the Indianapolis 500. In a once-a-year event like this, there is no tomorrow.

Synopsis: If CLUELESS was zapped into a movie where Gen X icon Nicole Eggert (BAYWATCH) falls in love with a body-snatching extraterrestrial, it still wouldn’t be enough to describe the mindwarping charm of AMANDA & THE ALIEN. Amanda (Eggert) is an artist who leads a quiet life. That is, until she falls in love with a hunky alien who can only survive by swapping human hosts every few days. This bizarro sci-fi comedy is an explosion of 1990s nostalgia, featuring navel rings, CGI morphing effects, an indie rock soundtrack from Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Gos and Sparks, and an unforgettable sex scene involving paprika.

Brazil, 1971: under the tightening grip of a military dictatorship, people across the country face the consequences of seemingly arbitrary and capricious governmental decisions and detainments. After her husband disappears, mother of five Eunice Paiva (Fernanda Torres in a Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated performance) is forced to reinvent herself after the government’s violent and arbitrary act. Based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s biographical book, I’m Still Here reconstructs a hidden portion of Brazil’s history through its compelling performances, resonant story, and masterful direction by past IU Cinema guest Walter Salles, all factors which resulted in its historic win as the first Brazilian film to be awarded the Best International Feature Oscar.
