Flesh for Frankenstein, aka Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein (despite having at best a tenuous relationship to Warhol), is a delectably gory and cynical social satire from acclaimed filmmaker Paul Morrissey, who critiques gratuitous sexuality by those very same means. With an exceptional cast, led by Udo Kier, Joe Dallesandro, Monique van Vooren, and Italian child star Nicoletta Elmi, and featuring a lush soundtrack by Claudio Gizzi, Flesh for Frankenstein became an immediate midnight and cult movie sensation.

Raas Royalty @ IU Auditorium, 1211 East 7th St., Bloomington
Feb 1 @ 5:00 pm

Sixteen years ago, a group of IU students founded Raas Royalty, one of the most prestigious Indian dance competitions. Raas Royalty showcases eight collegiate Raas dance teams from across the country and allows them to compete for the crown! For the 16th year running, Raas Royalty is free of charge and continues to be the only free collegiate garba-raas competition in the United States. Raas Royalty invites you to learn more about Indian culture and to watch creative and energetic performances from the best teams across the country.
What is Garba-Raas?
Garba and Raas are traditional forms of dance originating in Gujarat, a region in India. Both dance forms are performed during Navratri, a nine-day celebration that celebrates the victory of good over evil. This form of devotional dance (Raas) uses sticks called ‘dandiya’ and is a partner-oriented dance done to the beat of the dhol drum. In recent years, choreographed garba-raas has become increasingly popular at universities nationwide as competitions provide the outlet to showcase the talent and creative spin put on a timeless tradition.

Cicada Cinema presents: Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979, PG) @ Upland Wood Shop, 354 W 11th St, Bloomington
Feb 1 @ 7:00 pm – 8:45 pm

Synopsis: Werner Herzog’s only horror film is as rich with artistry and tragedy as his most grounded, human work. It is 1850 in the beautiful, perfectly-kept town of Wismar. Jonathan Harker (Bruno Ganz) is leaving on a long journey over the Carpathian Mountains to finalize real estate arrangements with a wealthy nobleman. His wife Lucy (POSSESSION’s Isabelle Adjani) begs him not to go and is troubled by a strong premonition of danger. Despite her warnings, Jonathan arrives four weeks later at a large, gloomy castle. Out of the mist appears a pale, wraith-like figure with deep-sunken eyes who identifies himself as Count Dracula (Klaus Kinski). The events that transpire slowly convince Harker that he is in the presence of a vampire. Even still, he doesn’t realize the magnitude of danger he, his wife and his town are about to experience.

Film: 1-800-ON-HER-OWN (an Ani DiFranco Documentary) @ Buskirk Chumley Theater, 114 E Kirkwood Ave., Bloomington
Feb 1 @ 7:00 pm – 8:15 pm

Ani DiFranco crashed onto the music scene in the early ‘90s, a thundering new voice in the cultural wilderness, unapologetically bisexual, political and feminist. She toured relentlessly, thrashing out hundreds of frenzied shows that were part mosh pit, part hootenanny and part full-on tent revival, then selling cassette tapes from the trunk of her car to make it to the next gig.
Ani became a worldwide phenomenon when she beat the male-dominated music industry at its own game by founding Righteous Babe Records, the first “woman-run non-corporate queer-happy” label, still going strong after nearly 35 years. The press called her “an entrepreneurial wonder” and “the industry’s worst nightmare.” Prince called her “my hero.” Ani simply called herself a folk singer, dedicated to art, activism and staying true to herself, no matter the cost.
1-800-ON-HER-OWN takes us on a wild cinematic road trip, from DiFranco’s punk-folk past to her life today as she reinvents herself as a passionate activist and revered rock star. Throughout the ride, she’s brutally honest, famously foul-mouthed and totally hilarious. Her daily challenges resonate as we reveal both an enduring, inspiring musical icon and a very relatable contemporary “everywoman” with her own epic fails and hard-won victories.

You’ll get all the many styles of music recorded by The Beatles as a group, and as solo artists… Rock & Roll, pop ballads, dance, swinging 60’s sound. Hadestown @ IU Auditorium, 1211 East 7th St., Bloomington
Feb 4 @ 7:30 pm

Making its Bloomington debut, Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, Hadestown is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.
