Synopsis: Out of the nearly 200 films directed by Euro-cult maestro Jess Franco, Vampyros Lesbos is the most essential. This artful, dreamlike retelling of Bram Stoker’s DRACULA’S GUEST stars the effervescent Soledad Miranda as the Countess—a vampire who casts an erotic spell over a vacationer named Linda. Floating on pure vibes, the film features dazzling scenes of arty, softcore horror that are infused with a psycho-sexadelic score.
Bad Hostage (dir. Mimi Wilcox, 2024, USA): A thrilling piece of family lore intersects with the famous kidnapping of Patty Hearst and a dramatic bank heist in Sweden in this investigation into the pernicious origins of Stockholm Syndrome. The Rebel Girls (dir. Felicia D. Henderson, 2024, USA): Inspired by the true story of the 1960s fight for Civil Rights, The Rebel Girls sees the movement through the eyes of the girls who reinvigorated the struggle through the power of magical thinking, friendship, faith, and fortitude. Winner of Best Live Action Short at the 2025 African American Film Critics Association Awards. [22 min; drama; English]
This screening will be followed by a Q&A with Bad Hostage director Mimi Wilcox and producer Max Asaf, The Rebel Girls director Felicia D. Henderson, and acclaimed documentarian Debra Tolchinsky.

Drawing on Marxist ecological thought, this lecture will examine the complex interplay between colonial history, indigenous politics, geoeconomics, and environmentalism in the context of deep-sea mining. On April 25, 2025, Pres. Tr*mp issued an executive order aimed at jump-starting the deep-sea mining industry by fast-tracking seabed mining permits in an effort to break China’s control over the critical minerals supply chain. Although the US is not a member of the International Seabed Authority (ISA)—the global body that governs the seabed in international waters—the US has forged ahead with their seabed mining plans in the name of national and economic security. Additionally, the “green energy” transition has launched a scramble for minerals such as lithium, cobalt, copper, and nickel, which are essential for electric vehicle batteries. This, along with the US-China conflict over rare earths, has catalyzed interest in deep-sea mining in the Pacific. Yet little is known about how the mining of polymetallic nodules on the seabed of the Pacific’s Clarion Clipperton Zone will affect delicate ocean ecosystems. Wang will explore the new modes of extraction that have ushered in what she calls ‘oceanic primitive accumulation.’

Dust off your leather jackets, pull on your bobby-socks and get ready as “bad boy” Danny and “the girl next door” Sandy fall in love all over again, right here in Martinsville! Grease is a popular musical that tells the story of a group of high school students in the 1950s. The musical follows the lives of the students at Rydell High School as they navigate their way through love, friendship, and the challenges of growing up, all set to a memorable soundtrack.
Ahmet, a 15-year-old boy from a remote Yuruk village in North Macedonia, finds refuge in music while navigating his father’s expectations, a conservative community, and his first experience with love—a girl whose future is already promised to someone else. Georgi M. Unkovski’s debut feature is a delightfully inspiring tale as old as time, told in a romantic and rebellious new way. A devoted shepherd longing for more than green pastures and the bleating of his faithful herd, Ahmet enlists his younger brother Naim to help him capture the attention (and hopefully, affections) of village beauty Aya, who is begrudgingly betrothed to another. Did we mention there’s a banging soundtrack and neon pink sheep to move the plot along? Winner of the Sundance World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Creative Vision. Songwriter Vienna Teng re-emerges this fall with her mashup song pair We’ve Got You – her first new music in over a decade – but her fans have been here the whole time. Vienna’s new mini-EP We’ve Got You reflects the complexity of her life over the past decade: climate change work, community building, parenthood. Two songs, each titled “We’ve Got You,” act like fraternal twins: one an indie-pop tribute to inspiring leaders, the other a chamber-folk paean to unsung caregivers. Played simultaneously, they reveal a new intricate whole: a mashup by design, and a love letter to social movements.
Appropriately, Vienna now also hosts climate action workshops on tour and online, which participants have described as “rocket fuel” and “the perfect antidote to despair.”
