Hayao Miyazaki’s underscreened but vital films hinges on one single truism: better a pig than a fascist.
From renowned Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki, Porco Rosso follows World War I flying ace Marco Pagott as he mysteriously turns from a man into a pig after all his comrades die in battle. Now known as Porco Rosso, the pilot continues fighting air pirates while, on the ground, flirting with a gorgeous club singer. After an attack by a brash American pilot, Porco meets confident Fio, who repairs his plane with her girl mechanics and sees him for who he really is. Get in the spirit with live holiday music, every Thursday night in December at the distillery! It’s an annual tradition of merry tunes, clinking cocktail glasses, and cozy cheer. Reservations recommended, 21+.
Look up “holiday music” in the dictionary, and it’s likely that there is a photo of the a cappella group Straight No Chaser instead of a standard definition. For more than two decades, the group that got its start at IU has provided the soundtrack of the season, bringing millions of fans to their feet while putting them in the holiday spirit. Year after year, fans anxiously await the moment they can officially hit play on Straight No Chaser favorites. And this year is no different.
Straight No Chaser is back returning to IU Auditorium as part of its Holiday Road tour, serving up an all-you-can-eat buffet of holiday music (with none of the calories). The nine-man act of Walter Chase, Jerome Collins, Seggie Isho, Michael Luginbill, Steve Morgan, Jasper Smith, Luke Bob Robinson, Tyler Trepp, and Freedom Young, has served as a festive blend of harmonious voices for more than 25 years. Even though the group has been together for a quarter of a century, the thrill of performing holiday songs for old and new fans alike is not lost on them, especially when they return to Bloomington, where it all began.
Mary Mother of God hosts this show by and for sex workers, and this round we’re raising money for a local houseless worker!
Nashville-based rocker, Willa Mae, makes music for critters, creatures, and girls. Weaving themes of southern living, gender, and nostalgia into catchy bubble-grunge anthems.
Celebrate the season! Drop in and join us by the upstairs fireplace for live music and hot cocoa and cookies.
Everyone is welcome!

In 1999, members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) convened in Seattle for what was supposed to be a series of routine negotiations. Instead, they were met with one of the largest U.S. protests of global powers in the 20th century. Protesters from across the aisle representing everything from labor rights to environmental protections filled the streets with signs and video cameras in tow. Crafted from a stunning array of newscaster broadcasts and outtakes, citizen journalist tapes, home videos, and press conferences, WTO/99 is an entirely archival film chronicling this consequential four-day event, which draws a direct line between the WTO protests and the issues of corporate control and environmental degradation we still reckon with 25 years later.
