A Premature Celebration of Life for David J. Colman, Your Invitation? @ Beth Shalom Social Hall, 3750 E 3rd St., Bloomington
Oct 11 @ 12:30 pm – 4:00 pm

For my birthday this year, my family suggested an intimate family party. Wonderful idea! But the more I thought about it, the more I realized what I’d really also love is to gather some of the people whose paths have crossed with mine — those shared moments that helped shape our journeys, filled our lives with memories, and left impressions that last to this day.

So if that describes and includes you (and I hope it does), I’d rather not wait for a “celebration of life” I probably wouldn’t get to enjoy. Let’s celebrate now — together — with food, drink, music, memories, stories, laughter, and good company (and yes, you’re welcome to bring a guest). To me, that sounds far better than a posthumous celebration of life, mainly because I get to be there and participate

Freedoms under Assault, a documentary @ Buskirk-Chumley Theatre, 114 East Kirkwood, Bloomington
    Oct 12 @ 2:00 pm

Freedoms under Assault is a powerful full-length documentary that chronicles the systematic destruction of a world-class university and the politically motivated culture war against its faculty over a two-year period. A perfect storm of an autocratic university president collaborating with a supermajority reactionary state legislature following the ideological agenda of the White House has effectively curtailed the institutional autonomy of Indiana University as well as shared governance structures, academic freedom, free speech and assembly rights, tenure, and the viability of arts and humanities programs. The documentary shows the lengths to which a university administration is willing to silence, intimidate, persecute and even exile faculty members in accord with arbitrary policies and “financial exigencies.” The film is co-directed/produced by Robert Arnove, IU Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus of Education, and award-winning documentarian, Jacky Comforty.
