1964 • US • 112 minutes • dir. Sidney Lumet
Synopsis: Miscommunication brings the USA and the USSR to the brink of nuclear war in Lumet’s adaptation of the Cold War novel by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler. An electronic malfunction leads a bomber squadron to mistakenly think they’ve been ordered by the President (Henry Fonda) to drop the big one on Moscow; an alliance of necessity emerges between the American and Soviet militaries as they scramble to thwart the imminent catastrophe. Walter Matthau co-stars as a scientist who might best be described as the anti-Strangelove. Released eight months after Kubrick’s 1964 satire, Fail-Safe is something else altogether: claustrophobic, tense, and utterly serious in confronting the possibility of global oblivion.

About Pulp Fiction

1990s indie film can be divided into two phases: before Pulp Fiction and after Pulp Fiction. Tarantino’s hyper-verbose, hyper-violent, ultra-hip film resurrected the career of John Travolta, made Samuel L. Jackson a superstar, and spawned a generation of homages and imitations. Weaving together six semi-related storylines of crime in L.A.’s underworld, it remains an unforgettable watch even decades later. Boasting an all-star cast alongside Travolta and Jackson, including Uma Thurman, Ving Rhames, Bruce Willis, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, and Amanda Plummer, and an absolutely killer soundtrack. [154 min; crime, drama; English, Spanish, and French with English subtitles]
