The first screening on May 1st will include 10 minutes of clips from a film that depict the racist tropes of Africans that Vieyra & Sembène set out to counteract through their own works. While the remaining films engage in critiques of colonialism and racism, the films themselves are appropriate for those 12 and older.
The Legacy of Ousmane Sembène & Paulin S. Vieyra is a film series which celebrates the crucial role these two pioneers played in the formation of early African cinemas. In collaboration with Bloomington’s Buskirk-Chumley Theater, every Thursday in May, the public will be invited to view African films at the BCT and to participate in discussions with film critics, some of the filmmakers’ collaborators, witnesses from the period, and African Film specialists. This public-facing event series will bring together both the Indiana University and Bloomington communities to engage in discussions of film, African cultures, the French-speaking world, and postcolonial history. It will also act as a kick-off event for the Collections of Sembène and Vieyra Archival Workshop which will bring an international cohort of scholars to the Indiana University campus in Summer 2025.
This series is organized by the Early African Cinemas Lab and sponsored by the Public Arts and Humanities Project, IU Department of French and Italian & the African Studies Program.

With a nod to the past and glance to the future the Dirty Grass Players are keeping alive the long history of bluegrass while pushing the traditional genre into the next generation. The Dirty Grass Players are an energetic explosion of old- time pickin’, coloured with an inventive, newgrass hand, that is given lyrical life by their soaring vocal harmonies that exist on an ethereal plain. They live at the crossroads between the traditional, which is the backbone of what they do, and the progressive with their innovative forward-thinking approach. The Dirty Grass Players, with their steady, workman-like precision and loose adventurous spirit are a band that can both confound Bill Monroe and cause him to smile uncontrollably. Their music is progressive, traditional, experimental, imaginative, and at its core, Dirty.

An exploration of contrasts, this exhibition brings together the distinct artistic visions of Nicholas Graham Hall and Catherine Conlin. “Minimalism & Maximalism: A Comparative Exhibition” invites viewers to engage in a visual dialogue between two seemingly opposing aesthetics.
Nicholas Graham Hall’s work explores minimalist concepts, focusing on the essential elements of form, color, and texture. His pieces often employ restraint and simplicity, inviting contemplation and a deeper connection with the core components of the artwork.
In contrast, Catherine Conlin embraces maximalism, creating richly layered and detailed pieces that overwhelm the senses. Her work is characterized by an abundance of imagery, vibrant colors, and a celebration of excess.

David Cronenberg | 2024 | Canada, France | R
In an eerie, deceptively placid near-future, a techno-entrepreneur named Karsh (Vincent Cassel) has developed a new software that will allow the bereaved to bear witness to the gradual decay of loved ones dead and buried in the earth. While Karsh is still reeling from the loss of his wife (Diane Kruger) from cancer—and falling into a peculiar sexual relationship with his wife’s sister (also Kruger)—a spate of vandalized graves utilizing his “shroud” technology begins to put his enterprise at risk, leading him to uncover a potentially vast conspiracy. Written following the death of the director’s wife, the new film from David Cronenberg is both a profoundly personal reckoning with grief and a descent into noir-tinged dystopia, set in an ominous world of self-driving cars, data theft, and A.I. personal assistants

This special event includes a delicious catered lunch served in the exclusive House of Rye, followed by an intimate concert experience.Andy Griggs often says his influences in music are like a pot of gumbo. Growing up in Monroe, LA, he was raised on Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimmy Swaggart, Waylon, Bill Monroe, hardcore blues, and hardcore rock’n roll, sprinkled with a touch of jazz. He often says, “there is no defining a style of song. As long as there’s soul, it has a place in music.”
Andy has seen thirteen of his singles on the Billboard country chart with six reaching the top ten and three at number one. These include Bluegrass #1 Georgia Peach” with Larry Sparks, “You Won’t Ever Be Lonely”, and “She’s More”. He’s also made two motion picture soundtracks.
Andy has recently been in the studio recording new music. He released “Why Do I Still Want You” as his first song from the project and he is excited to bring his hits, new and old, to audiences around the country.
