In the treacherous and swampy forests that make up the so-called “green border” between Belarus and Poland, refugees from the Middle East and Africa are lured by government propaganda promising easy passage to the European Union. Unable to cross into Europe and unable to turn back, they find themselves trapped in a rapidly escalating geopolitical stand-off. Thirty years after Europa Europa, three-time Academy Award-nominee Agnieszka Holland brings a masterful eye for realism and deep compassion to this blistering critique of a humanitarian calamity that continues to unfold.

Synopsis: A raucous work of queer fantasy and history, PLAYLAND conjures a time-bending night in Boston’s oldest and most notorious gay bar.
With an eclectic ensemble of queer performers, including drag icon Lady Bunny and Pose’s Danielle Cooper, Playland is transdisciplinary in every sense of the word: music, dance, archival footage, tableaux, opera, and performance art are layered into an ethereal piece subverting all boundaries. Artist-flmmaker Georden West’s debut feature is an expressionist and very queer bricolage, focusing on an atemporal night in the renowned Playland Café. Following its employees and others who have haunted the space, weaving together a tapestry of personal and community anecdotes across the bar’s existence.

Master filmmaker Fellini partnered with his iconic wife and muse, Giulietta Masina, for this phantasmagoric character study, which is also the director’s first color feature. Drawing on details from her own life, Masina is Juliet, a woman dabbling in spiritualism and whose hold on reality begins to slip when she learns that her husband is having an affair, sending her on a hallucinatory journey of self-discovery in which memories, dreams, and supernatural forces merge in a kaleidoscopic gestalt. With virtuosic cinematography from Gianni di Venanzo and a fearless lead performance by Masina, this is one of Fellini’s most visionary films.

BRONZE–
The seeds of Bronze were planted, curiously enough, at an avant-garde Japanese noise show. Dylan Ryan and Scott McGaughey first met as teenagers at DePaul University in Chicago, recognizing each other as having attended the same Ruins show, kindred spirits converging in the Chicago indie rock underground. They played in various rock bands in the 90s, but they found they had a particular itch that was not scratched by the various projects they were involved in; a shared love for the likes of Robin Gibb, Roxy Music and the soundtracks of Tangerine Dream, the kind of shimmering studio productions that sound luxurious but still push the envelope.
