Summary – Two green reporters and rivals working for the Washington Post, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, research the botched 1972 burglary of the Democratic Party Headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex. With the help of a mysterious source, code-named Deep Throat, the two reporters make a connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. Despite dire warnings about their safety, the duo follows the money all the way to the top.
In her feature-film directorial debut, an adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel The Virgin Suicides, writer/director Sofia Coppola explores the emotional underpinnings of a family starting to come apart in 1970s Midwestern America. The Lisbons seem like an ordinary enough family—Father (James Woods) teaches math at a high school in Michigan, Mother (Kathleen Turner) has a strong religious faith, and, together, they have five teenage daughters, ranging from 13-year-old Cecilia (Hannah Hall) to 17-year-old Therese (Leslie Hayman). However, the Lisbon family’s sense of normalcy is shattered when Cecilia falls into a deep depression and attempts suicide. The family is shaken and Mother and Father seek the advice of psychiatrist Dr. Hornicker (Danny DeVito), who suggests the girls should be allowed to socialize more with boys. However, boys soon become a serious problem for Cecilia’s sister Lux (Kirsten Dunst). [97 min; drama, romance; English]

In his follow-up to the Oscar-winning The English Patient, writer/director Anthony Minghella tried his hand at another tricky literary adaptation with The Talented Mr. Ripley, featuring ’90s heartthrob Matt Damon cast against type as a bisexual murderer. A bright and charismatic sociopath making his way in mid-1950s NYC through menial work and petty scams, Tom Ripley is hired through a case of mistaken identity by a shipping magnate to bring back his loafing son, Dickie (Jude Law), from a too-long extended Italian vacation with his girlfriend, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow). Tom soon finds that he’d rather be Dickie than bring him home and makes an impulsive decision with no return. The three enigmatic leads are buoyed by indelible supporting performances from Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman. [
