Film: Peeping Tom @ IU Cinema, 1213 East Seventh St. (on the North side of the IU Auditorium), Bloomington
Feb 6 @ 7:00 pm

Mark Lewis is a withdrawn young man who works as a focus puller in a film studio, moonlighting as a “private” photographer of scantily-clad women while obsessively working on his own “documentary” using the world’s most lethal tripod. An uncharacteristic thriller/horror movie by the co-director of The Red Shoes (whose prima ballerina, Moira Shearer, is also featured), Peeping Tom was savagely attacked by contemporary critics, stalling Michael Powell’s career for years. In the ensuing decades, the film’s reputation has skyrocketed, and it’s now recognized as a provocative study of voyeurism, a portrait of self-destruction, and blackly playful variations on “seeing” and identity. [101 min; thriller, horror; English]

In the 1970s, there was a reawakening of interest in and appreciation for the oral tradition of storytelling—not story reading, but telling a tale in one’s own words with one’s own perspective. MCPL was the birthplace of BSG as a group of librarians and other interested tellers dreamed of sharing the oral storytelling tradition with the community. 50 years later, join the Guild storytellers for a warm, cozy evening of stories and songs from this tradition and let the story celebration begin! Age 12 and up.

Vox Pop! a Post-Democratic Musical, lyrics by third year MFA playwriting candidate David Davila @ Ruth N. Halls Theatre, 275 North Eagleson Ave., Bloomington
Feb 9 @ 7:30 pm

In Vox-Pop! a Post-Democratic Musical, a group of rebel troubadours is surrounded on all sides by the deadly forces of an oppressive regime. Ryder Film Series: INSIDE THE YELLOW COCOON SHELL @ IU Radio and Television Theater, Radio & Television Theater (RTV 251) is at 1229 East 7th Street, Bloomington
Feb 10 @ 4:30 pm

Winner of the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the prestigious André Bazin Prize from Cahiers du Cinema, both celebrating outstanding feature debuts, this enthralling work from Vietnamese filmmaker Pham Thien An is a reverie on faith, loss, and nature expressed with uncommon invention and depth. The sudden death of his sister-in-law brings unexpected responsibilities to Thien (Le Phong Vu), who is reluctantly tasked with bringing his five-year-old nephew Dao to their countryside hometown. On the road, Thien is drawn into a search for his long-missing older brother, haunted and spurred forward by a series of sublime dreams that reignite suppressed memories, forbidden desires, and specters of his own youth. What began as a journey home becomes a pilgrimage marked by visual splendor and mystical overtones, a quest for understanding and certainty in a Vietnam that seems unable to provide any clear answers. As Thien battles with the existential question of what is worth living for, Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell interrogates the persistence and complexity of faith, not only in the spiritual but in the delicate beauty of earthly existence.
