Please register if you are interested. Join us on the third Thursday of the month to discuss a dynamic mix of fiction and nonfiction. This month’s selection is Inciting Joy by Ross Gay.
Summary:
Gay’s poetically influenced prose is nothing short of joyful. Blending the serious and the playful, this essay collection incites joy with writings about a wide range of actions and places: dancing, orchards, teaching, skateboarding, basketball courts, technology’s absence, death, authentic gratitude, and more. For Gay, joy is also incited by courage and honesty; his essays have a through line of offering the deeply personal and speaking truth to power.

Join us for an unforgettable evening celebrating 100 years of Disney through the lens of jazz with a special program titled When You Wish Upon a Star, featuring the newly created house band of The National Jazz Museum in Harlem. The band is led by pianist and musical director, Sean Mason, and features vocalists Kim Nalley and Sasha Dobson, who will bring these Disney favorites to life.
Each comedian is asked to do no more than five minutes of completely original material. While we do not care about foul language in your set, we do not allow racist, homophobic, transphobic or rape/female bashing jokes. If you have to ask if it’s racist, homophobic, transphobic or a rape joke, it probably is.
Comedians that wish to participate are asked to e-mail [email protected]. Newcomers and any participants who are not paid professionals will be required to bring audience members to see them. This is non-negotiable. So if you plan on signing up, be sure to invite as many friends as you can. Good luck!

A bourgeois French couple–idealistic organic farmers–settle in a Galician village. Their earnest enthusiasm reeks of patronizing privilege to the poor Spanish farmers who have toiled on the land for generations. Tensions between locals and foreigners boil over in this edge-of-your-seat thriller.
Hawktail is the instrumental acoustic group comprised of fiddler Brittany Haas (Crooked Still, Dave Rawlings Machine), bassist Paul Kowert (Punch Brothers, Dave Rawlings Machine), and guitarist Jordan Tice. Though at first glance Hawktail looks like a superpicker side-project, their all-original music is cohesive and unique, distinguishing them as an ensemble with a sound built from the ground up. Flush with orchestral sweeps and sparse vigils, with strains of the American South and the North Atlantic, this cosmopolitan sound is not what you’d expect from a string band.
Väsen hails from Uppsala, Sweden and is a perennial favorite at the Lotus World Music Festival, leading Bloomington to name a street after the group and the band to name an album after the street: Väsen Street. Olov Johansson (nyckelharpa) and Mikael Marin (viola) will perform on this tour as a duo and together in collaboration with Hawktail for a set not to be missed.

4:00-4:30pm Pre-concert talk
Join us for a wonderful pre-concert talk led by Dr. Christine Wisch. Like the country itself, Spain’s musical traditions are rich and diverse, but today’s audiences rarely have the opportunity to hear Spanish masterworks in concert. In this talk, Dr. Wisch explores some of the challenges of performing orchestral repertoire from Spain and offers an introduction to the many styles and genres of music represented in the BSO’s program. The half-hour talk briefly touches upon the lives of the composers and situates their music within the broader, better-known history of European art music. From the Aragonese jota to the Basque zortiko, Dr. Wisch will serve as your guide through the dances and musical influences that make up this orchestral program, which includes gems from the zarzuela tradition as well as arrangements of some of Spain’s most beloved masterpieces.
