Ryder Film Series: THE CONFORMIST @ IU Radio & Television Theater (RTV 251), 1229 East 7th St, Bloomington
Jan 6 @ 7:00 pm

At the peak of his creative powers the 29 year old Bernardo Bertolucci rejected the influence of mentor, Jean-Luc Godard, and partnered up with Vittorio Storaro and developed his own style, creating one of the most visually dazzling, politically and psychologically intriguing, landmark Italian films.

The story begins in Rome, 1938. Marcello (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is a young fascist who takes on the job of assassinating his former professor who has fled to Paris. A thriller as well as study of Italian politics and psychological character, Bertolucci’s Oscar nominated adaptation of Alberto Moravia’s novel (an adaptation Moravia greatly admired) has gone on to influence filmmakers such as Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Schrader and Martin Scorsese and remains one of the great triumphs of world cinema.

This is a new 4K restoration, supervised by Vittorio Storaro • 1970 • in Italian with English subtitles • 111 min

Stewart Huff (Shows at 7 pm and 9:15 pm) @ The Comedy Attic, Corner of 4th and Walnut (upstairs), Bloomington
Jan 6 @ 7:00 pm

Stewart Huff was born in Campbellsville, Kentucky and grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee. He has been performing comedy for over 15 years, beginning when he decided to drop out of college to become a writer. Currently touring theatres, comedy clubs and special events across the country, Huff reaches past the norm for his genuine — and genuinely unexpected — comedy. His knack for embracing the foibles of humanity and his refreshing originality make him as likeable as he is hilarious. A storyteller at heart, Huff continues to amaze with his clever material and personal wit.

Huff has performed in comedy clubs nationally and internationally, including the Improv in Los Angeles and New York, the Punchline in Atlanta and the Funny Bone in Omaha, as well as countless others.

Studio Ghibli at the BCT presents: ‘Ponyo’ @ Buskirk-Chumley Theatre, 114 East Kirkwood Ave, Bloomington

Ponyo centers on the friendship between five-year-old Sosuke and a magical goldfish named Ponyo, the young daughter of a sorcerer father and a sea-goddess mother. After a chance encounter, Ponyo yearns to become a human so she can be with Sosuke. As to be expected with Miyazaki, the film is awash in pure unbridled imagination and visual wonder — but it is the tender love, humor, and devotion exhibited by Ponyo and Sosuke that form the emotional heart of the film.
Studio Ghibli at the BCT:
1) Ponyo January 6th at 7pm
2) Princess Mononoke January 13th at 7pm

Jan 7 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Ideal for ages 5+ (or three / four year olds with parent participation)

Just as the environments where we live include different aspects pieced together, we will use collage to piece together a landscape. As we work, we will discuss places we live and have visited and our connection to these places.

Our work will be inspired by Ella Morton’s exhibition on view, The Dissolving Landscape. Ella’s material process expresses the complex relationship humans have with this landscape, which involves awe, admiration and exploitation. Read more about her work here: ellamorton.com.

Children may be dropped off or accompanied by one adult.

Winter Hike Series: Kelp Village, Brown County State Park @ Nature Center, Brown County State Park, 1405 S.R. 46 W, Nashville
Jan 7 @ 11:00 am – 12:30 pm

Before Brown County State Park became a park, the land was part of the county. Many homesteads existed here, including a small village known as Kelp Village. Hike with us as we explore this old village – we’ll see foundations of buildings, home sites, and more! This hike is about 1.5 miles round trip and is probably the least rugged of all the Winter Hikes. Most of this hike will be along a park road, but we will venture off the road and off trail into the woods to see some of the sites. There aren’t any big altitude changes which is what makes this one so much easier. There is also one creek crossing. Please dress for the weather. 1.5 miles, rating: Easy, 1.5 hours long Meet at the Nature Center; then we’ll carpool to the destination. Please do not bring pets on off trail hikes.

Ryder Film Series and Cicada Cinema present: NEPTUNE FROST (shows at 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm) @ IU Fine Arts Theater (upstairs), 1201 East 7th Street, on the north side of Showalter Fountain, next to the IU Auditorium
Jan 7 @ 4:30 pm

Multidisciplinary artist Saul Williams brings his unique dynamism to this Afrofuturist vision, a sci-fi punk musical that’s a visually wondrous amalgamation of themes, ideas, and songs that Williams has explored in his work, notably his 2016 album MartyrLoserKing. Co-directed with his partner, the Rwandan-born artist Anisia Uzeyman,

The film itself resists the very idea of a beginning and end; it shatters any attempt at summation. But we’ll try. Neptune Frost is the story of an intersex hacker (named Neptune Frost, and played by two different actors) who leads a revolt against the world’s resource-rich–those who mine Africa’s land and peoples to power global currency.

In the end, this film needs to be experienced on its own terms. Put differently: this is cinema as an ecological gift to the dispossessed. Generously creative and unafraid, Neptune Frost seeks to reclaim technology for progressive political ends. (105 min)

Jan 8 @ 4:30 pm

(105 min)

This month’s book: The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson https://bookshop.org/…/the-orphan-master-s…/15806082…
The Orphan Master’s Son is the story of Jun Do, an “everyman” caught up in high-stakes politics in a fictionalized version of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. As the son of the orphan master, Jun Do grows up among orphans and bears a martyr’s name, experiences which follow him throughout his life.
Part breathless thriller, part story of innocence lost, part story of romantic love, The Orphan Master’s Son is also a riveting portrait of a world heretofore hidden from view: a North Korea rife with hunger, corruption, and casual cruelty but also camaraderie, stolen moments of beauty, and love.
