The first one each month will begin with a tour to help new volunteers learn more about the Orchard and our methods. All volunteers are welcome, and no experience is necessary, however, as we transition to the “new normal,” we will still be limiting daily attendance to 25 volunteers, and requiring mask-wearing and social-distancing. We also ask that interested groups please schedule ahead. With the Orchard offering an opportunity for spacious outdoor volunteerism, we saw a lot of new faces this past year (at least from the eyes-up), and hope to see many more (including you) in the Orchard this year!

Mitchell Opera House fans, we have some exciting news! Although we don’t plan to host any inside events for a couple of more months, we are partnering up with the City of Mitchell to provide another outdoor concert series at the shelter house by City Hall, 406 South 6th Street. We want to keep you safe and still provide opportunities for local entertainment.
Lily Comer will be the first performance of this series, on May 1st at 6:00 p.m. Lily is 19 years old and originally from Welch, West Virginia. She has always loved music and grew up listening to classic country and rock music!. She really got into music when I started taking guitar lessons in 2014. That eventually led to her taking piano and vocal lessons. She started doing my own shows in 2017, while going to school and taking lessons. As she continued to do shows her audience grew. She started posting more on social media and her videos started getting shared on big Country pages such as Country Rebel and Country Music America. Now, she teaches music lessons, performs gigs throughout the week at different venues, and is majoring in Music Education at Bluefield College. Music is like a best friend to her, and she would be lost without it!
For this event series, we will be taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of all patrons! We will ask that you bring your own lawn chairs for the event and stay at least 10 feet away from others that are not in your group. If you leave your area for any reason, please wear a mask and practice social distancing. This will also be a smoke-free and alcohol-free event and a great opportunity for a night of family entertainment.
The May episode will feature performances by singer Rachel Caswell with Jeremy Allen on bass.

The Community Farmers’ Market of Owen County began in 2008 and was renamed to Owen County Farmers Market in 2012. The Owen County Farmers’ Market (OCFM) is committed to supporting locally grown and produced foods and brings the very best and freshest of the season to our community. The OCFM is a producer only market so you can shake the hand of the farmers that grow your food and meet the artisan that made it by hand. Our mission is to provide local producers and their neighbors a gathering place that fosters the connection between our food, our culture, our land, and our environment.
The Market is governed by a nine person Board Member Committee and the Market Season is overseen by a Market Manager. Board members terms are three years with election of new members in December to fill vacancies.
The Market offers entertainment during market days when available. Also when available, workshops on a variety of topics are hosted by volunteers during the market hours.
Vendor items include produce, meat, baked goods, eggs, jams, garden plants, flowers, dog treats, and artisan crafts. The Owen County Farmers Market has something for everyone, so we hope you will come on by for a visit!

Busman’s Holiday are the Rogers brothers, Lewis and Addison, hailing from the American Midwest. With two studio albums to their credit and a third on the way, theirs is a music rich in storytelling, melodious harmonies and impassioned, joyous performances. It draws upon moments of heightened emotion, experiences by men and women they have known and imagined.
Busman’s Holiday has been touring the country for over 10 years, most recently with bands such as Saint Seneca and Kishi Bashi. Born performers, their trademark improvisational banter on stage is contrasted with their commitment to the performance and their music. In live concert, they meld guitar, drumkit, and two voices into a wide range of moods and styles. Constantly experimenting to find new textures between their preferred acoustic instruments, they strive to innovate, while returning to what has always brought them pleasure; melody.

Our social hour is always the second Monday of the month from 5 to around 7pm or so. There is plenty of parking (metered on-street and parking lot). By being outside, we can socially distance but still connect. Remember: some of us drink, some don’t. Some of us eat, some don’t. All of us talk!
The mission of BWS is to promote a growing relationship with artists, to encourage one another, and provide opportunities for promoting and exhibiting our paintings in the community.
After a short business meeting, members enjoy an educational program or a demonstration by BWS members or professional artists. The demos are often interactive and provide time to paint. (There are no Monday meetings in December because of our holiday party. Most years there are no meetings in July or August; however, other activities are scheduled. In this year of the Coronavirus we will have meetings in July and August with art programming via Zoom—details in our newsletter: Brushstrokes)
Our Run Club meets every Monday at 6:00 PM at our downtown taproom. The Run Club is free to join! Choose a 1.5, 3 or 5-mile family-friendly course to run or walk and earn points towards run club milestone rewards! We all run the first mile together. Be sure to arrive at the brewery a little early each run to sign in. We will track your runs for you, and for each run milestone you hit (25, 50, 75, 100) you’ll receive a cool gift!
We formed our run club as part of our brewery’s dedication to our community. Our sixth Guiding Principle of how we run Switchyard states, “Be an active part of our community.” We believe that business can, and should be a catalyst for positive change within our community. We believe that a business has an obligation to give back to the community of which it is a part. Our run club is an extension of exactly that.
Our routes can be found on our Run Club Facebook page, on our RunGo Group or you can pick up a printout of our turn by turn directions for simple navigation at check-in.
As always, be courteous to our neighbors while running by making sure to look both ways before darting into traffic, running off to the side and letting cars pass, and be sure to give our neighbors a wave as you run by! 👋🏼
A very special thank you to the Bloomington Area Runners Association for their enthusiasm and for testing & facilitating the routes!
