Healthy Hoosier Hike planned at Hardin Ridge Recreation Area
The U.S. Forest Service, Indiana University (IU) Health, and the IU Center for Rural Engagement have joined forces to promote the health benefits of nature and are offering a series of “Healthy Hoosier Hikes” throughout the year. The next hike is planned for Saturday, June 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EDT at Hardin Ridge Recreation Area, located just south of Bloomington in the Hoosier National Forest. This family-friendly hike will have a guide and a medical professional from IU Health to provide health awareness and will offer two options. Attendees can choose a 1.2 mile hike or a 3.5 mile option. Space is limited and participants are asked to register at this link. The fee at the gate will be waived for hike participants. Attendees are welcome to bring a sack lunch, and water, sunscreen, and closed toe shoes are recommended.
The partner organizations have a goal of improving community health by promoting physical activities in nature settings and creating awareness of the physical and mental health benefits of being in nature. Studies show that being in nature reduces stress, improves mood and mental performance, inspires creativity, and may lead to longer lifespans. Physical activities such as hiking, biking or running, improve physical and mental health. Hoosier National Forest provides over 260 miles of trails for public access to nature between Monroe Reservoir and the Ohio River.

Werner Herzog and André Singer’s riveting documentary, filled with unforgettable archive materials and based on three long interviews, provides incredible access to, arguably, the world’s greatest living politician. Now 87 and battling illness, the visionary Mikhail Gorbachev, former General Secretary of the U.S.S.R, has mellowed and slowed down. Still, gently but resolutely, he is pushing towards his goals. Herzog, as on-screen interviewer, does not disguise his affection, celebrating Gorbachev’s three remarkable accomplishments: negotiations with the U.S. to reduce nuclear weapons; cessation of Soviet control of Eastern Europe and the reunification of Germany; and the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc. All of this in six years! One German diplomat sums up Gorbachev’s approach: “The process went so quickly that… opponents were overcome by the reality of the situation.” Herzog and Singer remind us of the drastic and unforeseeable way the world changes.

Jia Zhangke’s extraordinary body of work has doubled as a record of 21st-century China and its warp-speed transformations. Ash Is Purest White is at once his funniest and most emotionally generous film–a smart rumination on love and a 21st century, feminist take on the gangster film.
Zhao Tao, the filmmaker’s muse, and wife, stars as the formidable, quick-witted Qiao, a heroine for the ages.

Chulas Fronteras features a rich soundtrack of songs about unrequited loves and migrant struggles. The music is a fusion of traditional Mexican harmonies, German dancehall rhythms and a little something extra. From soulful, lively dance tunes to political work songs, música Norteña has evolved since the turn of the 20th century into a unique Mexican-American hybrid. Blank links the music’s spirit and vitality to the strong family bonds of Tejanos. The plight of migrant workers adds a sobering backbeat to this joyous film.
For this effort, Blank teamed up with Chris Strachwitz, a producer who specialized in collecting and distributing Norteño records. They made the film to alert English speakers of music as distinctly American and unique as jazz or the blues.
Selected for The Library Of Congress, National Film Registry of motion pictures, to be preserved in perpetuity. 1979, 28 min.
Directed by Maureen Gosling, Les Blank, Guillermo Hernández & Chris Strachwitz
A lyrical journey through the heart of Chicano culture as reflected in the love songs of the Tex-Mex Norteña music tradition, constructed from outtakes from Chulas Fronteras and brought to life by long time collaborator of Les Blank’s, Maureen Gosling.

We formed our run club as part of our brewery’s dedication to our community. Our sixth Guiding Principle of how we run Switchyard states, “Be an active part of our community.” We believe that business can, and should be a catalyst for positive change within our community. We believe that a business has an obligation to give back to the community of which it is a part. Our run club is an extension of exactly that.
Our routes can be found on our Run Club Facebook page, or you can pick up a printout of our turn by turn directions for simple navigation at check-in.
As always, be courteous to our neighbors while running by making sure to look both ways before darting into traffic, running off to the side and letting cars pass, and be sure to give our neighbors a wave as you run by! 👋🏼
We all run the first mile together.
Be sure to arrive at the brewery a little early each run to sign in.
