May 31 @ 7:00 pm
Sabrina Jalees (18+show), The Bishop Bar, 123 S. Walnut St., Bloomington, IN
May 31 @ 7:30 pm

Though many comedians you see each year at Limestone have previously visited The Comedy Attic, one of the biggest goals we set out to accomplish each year is bringing some new faces to add a new dimension to the lineup. A great example of this is Sabrina Jalees.

Sabrina is already a star in her native Canada and is quickly becoming a comic to watch in America as well. Her Netflix comedy special debuted last year, and she’s currently developing a new series for Fox with Academy Award winner Diablo Cody. Sabrina has written for Transparent and TBS’ Search Party and has made appearances on Last Comic Standing, Adam Devine’s House Party on Comedy Central & VH1’s Best Week Ever. Sabrina has also written for Huffington Post, where she chronicled her experiences of coming out to her Pakistani family and the heartbreak of being shunned by those who helped raise her as she prepared for her wedding.

LCF was founded in 2013 by Mat Alano-Martin and Jared Thompson and made possible through the support of their friends and family, sponsors, partner venues, and the best comedy fans in the world. https://www.limestonefest.com

The Art of Radio with Phil Proctor and David Ossman – What’s Left of the Firesign Theatre @ Brown County Playhouse, 70 South Van Buren Street, Nashville
May 31 @ 7:30 pm

David Ossman and Phil Proctor will perform a very special 2-man multi-media comedy show The Art of Radio with Phil Proctor and David Ossman – What’s Left of the Firesign Theatre presented and sponsored by The Friends of the Firehouse Follies from Bloomington, Indiana.

The show will last approximately 90 minutes including a Q&A session with David and Phil.

Ossman and Proctor were a part of the four-man team that made up the original “Firesign Theatre,” an iconic comedy group that got its start on listener-supported radio in Los Angeles in 1966. The group was nominated for three Grammy awards, and was named by Entertainment magazine as one of the “Thirty Greatest Acts of All Time.” The other two members of the Firesign team, Peter Bergman and Phil Austin, have passed away.

Proctor, of Amish and Irish origins, originally hails from Goshen, Indiana, but the group has never performed in the Hoosier state, even though there has been speculation (neither confirmed nor denied) that the town of “Billville,” celebrated in works such as “Boom dot Bust” was in fact based on Bloomington.

The Buddy Cole Monologues (7:30 pm and 10 pm shows) @ Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 East Kirkwood Ave.

‘Wedding in Galilee’ @ IU Fine Arts Upstairs, 1201 East 7th Street, on the north side of Showalter Fountain, next to the IU Auditorium
May 31 @ 8:00 pm

Wedding in Galilee is the first major Palestinian fiction film to be made by an “insider,” an Israeli Palestinian. It was awarded the International Critics Prize at Cannes in 1987.

The elder of a Palestinian village under Israeli military rule wants permission to hold a traditional wedding for his son that will go past the imposed curfew. The Army commander agrees on the condition that he and his officers be invited as guests of honor at the ceremony. Filmmaker Michel Khleifi’s extraordinary first feature is an erotic and often compelling meditation on two conflicting cultures who attempt to put aside their differences for one long day of celebration.

The Matrix 20th Anniversary Screening, with (in order) The Matrix, and The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions @ IU Cinema, 1213 E. 7th Street - on the North side of the IU Auditorium
Jun 1 @ 1:00 pm – 7:23 pm

The Matrix Revisited

No two directors have set out to redefine and reinvent late 20th- and early 21st-century cinema more so than The Wachowskis. On the 20th anniversary of the release of The Matrix, IU Cinema proudly presents the entirety of The Matrix trilogy—the most ambitious trilogy and multimedia project based off of an original idea since 1977’s Star Wars. Starting with the landmark 1999 film that reshaped action for more than a decade and ending with two films that question the very nature of the first, The Matrix trilogy includes three grandiose pieces of cinema about love, identity, mythology, and choice which are as misunderstood as they are beloved. The three films will be presented as one screening with films screened back-to-back with approximately 30-minutes between screenings and no clearing of the Cinema.  One ticket will gain entry for all three films, and patrons may arrive or leave at any point during the screening marathon.

Eva is a triumph of hope, and this film is her legacy piece. “Eva is more than just a story,” says actor Elliot Gould. “She’s a revelation of what’s possible in the human condition.”

Narrated by Hollywood icon Ed Asner, Eva: A-7063 tells the full, astonishing story of this historic figure for the first time, tracking her from Auschwitz to Israel to the United States – even into the U.S. Capitol for her jaw-dropping arrest – and ultimately to her courageous return to the Nazi death camp.

Our sixth Guiding Principle of how we run Switchyard states, “Be an active part of our community.” We believe that business can, and should be a catalyst for positive change within our community. As always, be courteous to our neighbors while running by making sure to look both ways before darting into traffic, running off to the side and letting cars pass, and be sure to give our neighbors a wave as you run by! 👋🏼

Stephen Marley: Acoustic Jams Tour, Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Avenue Bloomington, IN
Jun 4 @ 8:00 pm

The second son of Bob and Rita Marley, eight-time Grammy-winning musician and producer Stephen began his career as a precocious six-year old singing, dancing and playing percussion with his siblings in the group The Melody Makers. As a teenager he assisted in the production of The Melody Makers’ albums including three that would win the Grammy for Best Reggae Album.

In 1993, Stephen co-founded Ghetto Youths International with older brother Ziggy as a means of controlling their own music and helping upcoming artists. Stephen’s earliest solo production efforts include his late grandmother’s album My Altar, followed in 1995 by Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers single “Works To Do” and younger brother Damian’s “10,000 Chariots.” In 1996, Damian released his debut album, Mr. Marley, on the Ghetto Youths imprint. Stephen played several instruments and wrote most of the songs, in addition to producing the album.

The first project that brought Stephen’s production capabilities widespread attention was Chant Down Babylon, where he audaciously manipulated his father’s original vocal outtakes from the 1970s Island Records’ sessions, splicing them into duets with hip-hop and R&B artists, while updating the Wailers’ richly textured one-drop rhythms with an assortment of samples, loops and overdubs. Chant Down Babylon achieved its objective of bringing Bob’s music to a new generation of fans, earned a Grammy nomination, was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, and has sold more than one million copies worldwide.

Stephen’s first solo effort, Mind Control, won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2007. In 2008, Marley released an acoustic version of the hit album, which gained the artist another Grammy. In 2011, Stephen released his third solo album, The Revelation, Pt.1: The Root of Life, which reconfirmed Stephen’s expansive capabilities as an affecting vocalist, a versatile lyricist, and an accomplished instrumentalist, while furthering his renown as an ingenious producer.

Stephen continued to showcase his talent for navigating between genres by effortlessly blending reggae with soul, hip hop and electronic beats on his fourth solo album, Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life, released in 2016. A robust reflection of his work, the album features songs with notable artists including Rakim, Dead Prez, Wyclef Jean, Black Thought, Shaggy, Pitbull, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, and more.

His appearance at the BCT is part of the Acoustic Jams Tour and his daughter, Mystic Marley, will open the show. Doors will open for this GENERAL ADMISSION performance at 7:30pm. There will not be seats in the orchestra pit.

The Brother Brothers, The Bishop Bar, 123 S. Walnut Street, Bloomington, IN
Jun 6 @ 9:00 pm

The Brother Brothers carry the folk tradition for a new generation. Identical twins David and Adam Moss honor contemporary aches with the nostalgic tenderness of another time on their debut full-length album, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW, out October 19, 2018 on Compass Records. Their stunning songcraft blends masterfully gentle guitar, cello and five-string fiddle with the sublime sort of two-part harmonies only brothers can carry. Their palpably fraternal stage presence and wonderfully familiar heart have earned repute among a modern folk scene; The Brother Brothers have recently opened for Big Thief, Lake Street Dive, Shakey Graves and more.

The album’s title, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW, refers to the personal nature of these songs. As David explains, “I think every song on the album is about a person or a character, and in a way, it’s a reflection of ourselves.” For example, “Mary Ann,” written by David, is an encouraging ode to a friend with depression. “Banjo Song,” written by Adam, conveys a conversation with someone who gives up playing an instrument after a hurtful breakup. Though he’s usually on fiddle, Adam plays banjo on the track; throughout the album, David plays guitar and cello.

Recorded at Mark Ettinger’s Lethe Lounge in New York City with producer Robin Macmillan and engineer Jefferson Hamer, The Brother Brothers capably capture a modern snapshot of their surroundings. Yet, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW retains a timeless feel – something that the brothers were aiming for.

“I just want people to listen to it once and want to listen to it again,” David says of the album. “And every time they listen to it, I want them to find something new and in some way relate it to themselves. Whether they’re listening to it today or in 40 years, I hope it will make them feel just the same.”

Ryder Film Series: ‘Before Stonewall’ @ IU Fine Arts Upstairs, 1201 East 7th Street, on the north side of Showalter Fountain, next to the IU Auditorium
Jun 7 @ 6:15 pm

In 1969 the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village, leading to three nights of rioting by the city’s gay community. With this outpouring of courage and unity the gay liberation movement had begun.

Before Stonewall pries open the closet door, setting free the dramatic story of the sometimes horrifying public and private existences experienced by LGBT Americans since the early 1900’s. Revealing and often humorous, this widely acclaimed film relives the emotionally-charged sparking of today’s gay rights movement, from the events that led to the fevered 1969 riots to many other milestones in the brave fight for acceptance.

Narrated by iconic author Rita Mae Brown. Groundbreaking interviews with Ann Bannon, Martin Duberman, Allen Ginsberg, Barbara Gittings, Harry Hay, Mabel Hampton, Dr. Evelyn Hooker, Frank Kameny, Audre Lorde, and Richard Bruce Nugent (87 min)

Cari Ray’s ‘For a Song’ Series featuring: RALPH ED JEFFERS, NICK NACE, CHUCK WILLS (guest host) @ Country Heritage Winery, 225 S Van Buren St # 3, Nashville
Jun 7 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

A NOTE FROM CARI ABOUT THE “FOR A SONG” SERIES:
As I’ve been out touring the region and the country, one of the most amazing things has been the willingness of fellow songwriters to help a new girl in a new town…from sharing connections and putting in a good word, to sharing their stages and fans. So it was on my mind for some time to create an opportunity close to home where I might be able return the favor.

I had been working with Chateau Thomas Winery (Now Country Heritage Winery) in Nashville, IN for a few years to cultivate a singular, listening room atmosphere in a tourist town full of bar gigs. And we were able to do so with surprising success. So when I thought about who I’d like to partner with to bring this idea to life, the listening room and the audience we had built there seemed the perfect choice. And the support of the winery means the only costs to the audience are time, attention, and the generosity they choose to express through the tip jar.

I hosted the first “For a Song” Series of writers in the round at the Nashville Tasting Room April 28, 2017. Two accomplished songwriters and I sat in front of a packed house of listeners and spent the evening sharing our songs and the stories behind them. No two FAS evenings are alike as each new pair of writers joining me brings a different flavor, but the evenings have felt consistently warm, fun and connected. My goal is to continue offering fellow songwriters an opportunity to sit in front of an appreciative, listening crowd and to offer that audience a high-quality performance of original music by the artists who created it.

Folks can expect a laid-back evening…an opportunity to slow down, focus, and reconnect.

Ryder Film Series: ‘Non-Fiction’ @ IU Global and International Studies Theater, 355 N Jordan Ave,
Jun 7 @ 7:00 pm

Juliette Binoche and Guillame Canet reunite with acclaimed director Olivier Assayas (Personal ShopperSummer Hours) for this wry, seductive tale of sex, lies, and literature. Set amidst the bohemian intelligentsia of the Parisian publishing world, Non-Fiction traces the romantic and emotional fallout that results when a controversial writer blurs the line between fact and fiction, using his real-life love affairs—including a passionate fling with an actress (Binoche) who happens to be married to his editor (Canet)—as fodder for his explosive new novel. Balancing dry wit with keen observations on the tensions between art, commerce, and technology, Non-Fiction is a buoyant, breezy delight from a master director at his most effortlessly brilliant.
