This free program is designed for friends and family care partners to learn to use museum resources to encourage memory sharing and help people to live well with dementia. The workshop centers on objects, photographs, ephemera, and their associated stories housed at the Monroe County History Center.

Care partners will learn what types of memory activities and resources are available and how to use them to communicate with people living with dementia. Examples include using memory boxes and participating in museum programs.

Director Sydney Pollack’s footage has never been publicly screened until recently cleared for release by Franklin’s estate following her death last August. The films is a must-see for any fans of The Queen of Soul and offers an amazing portrait of an inspirational and impassioned artist in her prime.

LAHSOW-Bloomington Opera Workshop returns for a 6th summer to offer Mozart’s timeless, witty masterpiece presented in concert version in its entirety, sung in Italian with English subtitles projected. The casts are a fine blend of young professionals visiting from Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Texas and California.

Performances will take place May 30th, May 31st and June 1st at 7:00 PM with rotating casts.

Content is recommended for those 16 and older.

Maria’s approach to comedy has never been and can’t be replicated. Maria’s career is an eclectic masterwork that covers everything from critically acclaimed TV series (Arrested Development, Louie) to voiceover work on some of today’s best animated series (Adventure Time, Bojack Horseman). And of course, Maria created and starred in the biographical Netflix series Lady Dynamite.

Comedian Stewart Huff uses the word “junk” to describe the unique items he collects. However, as you hear the stories behind them, they become much more than junk. They’re lost treasures, windows into a forgotten past and people’s lives and yes they’re his obsessions. This special live taping of the podcast Obsessive Curiosities at #LCF19 will feature items from the Kinsey Institute Special Collections and panelist Rebecca Fasman, Curator.

David Ossman and Phil Proctor will perform a very special 2-man multi-media comedy show The Art of Radio with Phil Proctor and David Ossman – What’s Left of the Firesign Theatre presented and sponsored by The Friends of the Firehouse Follies from Bloomington, Indiana.

The show will last approximately 90 minutes including a Q&A session with David and Phil.

Ossman and Proctor were a part of the four-man team that made up the original “Firesign Theatre,” an iconic comedy group that got its start on listener-supported radio in Los Angeles in 1966. The group was nominated for three Grammy awards, and was named by Entertainment magazine as one of the “Thirty Greatest Acts of All Time.” The other two members of the Firesign team, Peter Bergman and Phil Austin, have passed away.

Proctor, of Amish and Irish origins, originally hails from Goshen, Indiana, but the group has never performed in the Hoosier state, even though there has been speculation (neither confirmed nor denied) that the town of “Billville,” celebrated in works such as “Boom dot Bust” was in fact based on Bloomington.

Wedding in Galilee is the first major Palestinian fiction film to be made by an “insider,” an Israeli Palestinian. It was awarded the International Critics Prize at Cannes in 1987.

The elder of a Palestinian village under Israeli military rule wants permission to hold a traditional wedding for his son that will go past the imposed curfew. The Army commander agrees on the condition that he and his officers be invited as guests of honor at the ceremony. Filmmaker Michel Khleifi’s extraordinary first feature is an erotic and often compelling meditation on two conflicting cultures who attempt to put aside their differences for one long day of celebration.

The Matrix Revisited

No two directors have set out to redefine and reinvent late 20th- and early 21st-century cinema more so than The Wachowskis. On the 20th anniversary of the release of The Matrix, IU Cinema proudly presents the entirety of The Matrix trilogy—the most ambitious trilogy and multimedia project based off of an original idea since 1977’s Star Wars. Starting with the landmark 1999 film that reshaped action for more than a decade and ending with two films that question the very nature of the first, The Matrix trilogy includes three grandiose pieces of cinema about love, identity, mythology, and choice which are as misunderstood as they are beloved. The three films will be presented as one screening with films screened back-to-back with approximately 30-minutes between screenings and no clearing of the Cinema.  One ticket will gain entry for all three films, and patrons may arrive or leave at any point during the screening marathon.

Come out to the Mitchell Opera House to see some of the best local talent around, that will compete for a chance to participate in the final talent showcase! The Mitchell Opera House Live Talent Showcase is open to local members of the community of all ages, residing in Crawford, Greene, Jackson, Martin, Monroe, Lawrence, Orange, and Washington counties. This contest is for amateurs, not those who are performing professionally and is an opportunity for the talent contestants to have a chance at a $1,000 grand prize! Mark Bryant will emcee the event.

The second son of Bob and Rita Marley, eight-time Grammy-winning musician and producer Stephen began his career as a precocious six-year old singing, dancing and playing percussion with his siblings in the group The Melody Makers. As a teenager he assisted in the production of The Melody Makers’ albums including three that would win the Grammy for Best Reggae Album.

In 1993, Stephen co-founded Ghetto Youths International with older brother Ziggy as a means of controlling their own music and helping upcoming artists. Stephen’s earliest solo production efforts include his late grandmother’s album My Altar, followed in 1995 by Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers single “Works To Do” and younger brother Damian’s “10,000 Chariots.” In 1996, Damian released his debut album, Mr. Marley, on the Ghetto Youths imprint. Stephen played several instruments and wrote most of the songs, in addition to producing the album.

The first project that brought Stephen’s production capabilities widespread attention was Chant Down Babylon, where he audaciously manipulated his father’s original vocal outtakes from the 1970s Island Records’ sessions, splicing them into duets with hip-hop and R&B artists, while updating the Wailers’ richly textured one-drop rhythms with an assortment of samples, loops and overdubs. Chant Down Babylon achieved its objective of bringing Bob’s music to a new generation of fans, earned a Grammy nomination, was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, and has sold more than one million copies worldwide.

Stephen’s first solo effort, Mind Control, won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2007. In 2008, Marley released an acoustic version of the hit album, which gained the artist another Grammy. In 2011, Stephen released his third solo album, The Revelation, Pt.1: The Root of Life, which reconfirmed Stephen’s expansive capabilities as an affecting vocalist, a versatile lyricist, and an accomplished instrumentalist, while furthering his renown as an ingenious producer.

Stephen continued to showcase his talent for navigating between genres by effortlessly blending reggae with soul, hip hop and electronic beats on his fourth solo album, Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life, released in 2016. A robust reflection of his work, the album features songs with notable artists including Rakim, Dead Prez, Wyclef Jean, Black Thought, Shaggy, Pitbull, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, and more.

His appearance at the BCT is part of the Acoustic Jams Tour and his daughter, Mystic Marley, will open the show. Doors will open for this GENERAL ADMISSION performance at 7:30pm. There will not be seats in the orchestra pit.

Our two breakfasts are always the first Wednesday and the third Friday of the month at 10am. We meet at the Cloverleaf South Restaurant on Winslow at Henderson, behind the IU Credit Union in a shopping center that also has Avers Pizza and a hardware store. Anywhere from 12-25 of us sit at one long table; they just add more chairs and tables as our group grows.

Bloomington Parks and Recreation and the Bloomington Fire Department present Fitness with a Firefighter—a weekly workout. All fitness levels are welcome. Workouts vary, and usually combine cardiovascular and strength training exercises. Modifications are available if needed. Workouts are approximately 30-45 minutes. Registration is not required. Workouts take place rain or shine. Geared for ages 18 and up, but all are welcome with guardian approval. Look for our event on Facebook to stay up to date! Come by for an hour of light gardening and an hour of dining outside! A vegetarian friendly meal will be provided and we’ll plan to eat together outside in the back gardens, weather permitting. All ages and experience levels are welcome.

The Writers Guild at Bloomington is an association of writers committed to mutual support and the professional development of their craft. Its mission is to foster interaction among writers as well as other artists, educators, and the Monroe County public, thereby enhancing the vibrancy of the arts and the writing community in the greater Bloomington area.

Join the original cast and relive the wonderful story of BPP’s best selling show of all time. Then stick around for the announcement of the 2019-20 Season (our 40th!). Then finish the evening with a toast to BPP and the opportunity to buy us some presents (but cash is fine too!). All proceeds go to supporting the quality work you have come to expect from the BPP.

Set a few years after Belarus gained independence in 1990, this vibrant debut feature by writer/director Darya Zhuk follows the path of young Evelina, who dreams of moving to Chicago where she could pursue her passion for house music. However, obtaining a U.S. visa proves a difficult endeavor and, determined to flee the country, the young woman takes the risk of buying a letter of employment from the black market. Depicting a nation anticipating a brighter future, Crystal Swan is a story about a woman and her country, where feelings of self and belonging are yet to be defined. The film was selected as the Belarusian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards—Belarus’s first Oscar submission in 22 years. The Crystal Swan soundtrack features tracks from a handful of Chicago club legends, including Marshall Jefferson and Derrick Carter. In Russian with English subtitles. Contains mature content, including sexual violence and drug references.

The Brother Brothers carry the folk tradition for a new generation. Identical twins David and Adam Moss honor contemporary aches with the nostalgic tenderness of another time on their debut full-length album, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW, out October 19, 2018 on Compass Records. Their stunning songcraft blends masterfully gentle guitar, cello and five-string fiddle with the sublime sort of two-part harmonies only brothers can carry. Their palpably fraternal stage presence and wonderfully familiar heart have earned repute among a modern folk scene; The Brother Brothers have recently opened for Big Thief, Lake Street Dive, Shakey Graves and more.

The album’s title, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW, refers to the personal nature of these songs. As David explains, “I think every song on the album is about a person or a character, and in a way, it’s a reflection of ourselves.” For example, “Mary Ann,” written by David, is an encouraging ode to a friend with depression. “Banjo Song,” written by Adam, conveys a conversation with someone who gives up playing an instrument after a hurtful breakup. Though he’s usually on fiddle, Adam plays banjo on the track; throughout the album, David plays guitar and cello.

Recorded at Mark Ettinger’s Lethe Lounge in New York City with producer Robin Macmillan and engineer Jefferson Hamer, The Brother Brothers capably capture a modern snapshot of their surroundings. Yet, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW retains a timeless feel – something that the brothers were aiming for.

“I just want people to listen to it once and want to listen to it again,” David says of the album. “And every time they listen to it, I want them to find something new and in some way relate it to themselves. Whether they’re listening to it today or in 40 years, I hope it will make them feel just the same.”
