Bloomington Parks and Recreation and the Bloomington Fire Department present Fitness with a Firefighter—a weekly workout. All fitness levels are welcome. Workouts vary, and usually combine cardiovascular and strength training exercises. Modifications are available if needed. Workouts are approximately 30-45 minutes. Registration is not required. Founded by bassist Hannah Marks in 2017, Heartland Trio consists of Hannah Marks on double bass and vocals, Barclay Moffitt on tenor saxophone, and Rocky Martin on drums. The band, who recently won the inaugural Detroit Jazz Festival Collegiate Combo Competition, draws from Marks’ musical upbringing in folk and spirituals, while grounded in the group’s improvisational and groove background of jazz and rock. Along with their original compositions, Heartland Trio also uses jazz standards, rock songs, and traditional folk tunes as vehicles for expression. The trio’s sound reflects their desire to create with a gritty and spontaneous garage band mentality while exploring beyond the boundaries of the traditional roles of their instruments in a jazz setting. Their debut album, Year One, was released in November 2018.

The Jewish Theatre of Bloomington’s 2019 season opens with Cherry Docs written by Canadian playwright David Gow. Directed by Liam Castellan, this drama follows a neo-Nazi Skinhead, played by Christopher Crider-Plonka, who is charged with murder in Toronto. Legal Aid assigns him a Jewish lawyer, played by JTB veteran Jonathan Golembiecki, and they are forced to collaborate on a defense. The Skinhead is pushed beyond his prejudice, while the lawyer is forced to examine the limits of his own liberal tolerance, and the demons that might be underneath it. Cherry Docs is a white-hot examination of hate and how hard it is to uproot from society.

Fabuloso is everything and nothing. The shows they present are now and eternal.
A group of improvisers hailing from Bloomington, Indiana, they currently specialize in long-form sets: narrative stories they come up with as opposed to presenting games and short-form improv. The group continues to sharpen those skills, though. Fabuloso strives to present shows that provoke laughter and thought, with hopes you’ll have something to talk about on the drive home.
The Sklar Brothers, are a post-modern take on a stand up comedy duo. Neil Strauss of the New York Times once wrote “Their comedy accepts the reality of being twins but does not use it as a crutch. Instead, they work their physical and mental similarities and correspondences, their status as imperfect carbon copies of each other. In their comedy the straight man is often an echo.” They have released 4 critically acclaimed comedy albums, have had two Comedy Central Half Hour Presents specials, and currently have a one hour stand up special on Netflix, titled “What Are We Talking About” Their next one hour special will appear on Seeso in 2017.
Randy and Jason are also writers, directors and actors appearing in a wide variety of shows from Entourage to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to Maron, to Curb Your Enthusiasm. They are currently recurring characters on TruTV’s Those Who Can’t. However, they are perhaps most well known for their show Cheap Seats, a cult hit that appeared on ESPN Classic for 77 episodes.

Masaki Kobayashi’s mammoth humanist drama is one of the most staggering achievements of Japanese cinema. Originally filmed and released in three parts, the nine-and-a-half-hour The Human Condition, adapted from Junpei Gomikawa’s novel, tells of the journey of the well-intentioned, yet naïve, Kaji from labor camp supervisor to Imperial Army soldier to Soviet prisoner of war. Constantly trying to rise above a corrupt system, Kaji finds his morals an impediment rather than an advantage. A raw indictment of its nation’s wartime mentality, as well as a personal existential tragedy, Kobayashi’s riveting, gorgeously filmed epic is cinema at its best. This screening includes all three parts of the epic film, No Greater Love (part I, 1959), Road to Eternity (part II, 1959), and A Soldier’s Prayer (part III, 1961). In Japanese, Mandarin, and Russian with English subtitles.

The Mountain Goats are John Darnielle, Peter Hughes, Jon Wurster, and Matt Douglas. They have been making music together as a quartet for several years. Three of them live in North Carolina and one has moved back to Rochester. Their songs often seek out dark lairs within which terrible monsters dwell, but their mission is to retrieve the treasure from the dark lair and persuade the terrible monsters inside to seek out the path of redemption. As Axl Rose once memorably asked, in the song “Terrible Monster”: “What’s so terrible about monsters, anyway?” This is the question the Mountain Goats have been doggedly pursuing since 1991. They will never leave off this quest until every option has been exhausted. Thank you.
