Film Screening: America to Me
Documentary Tackles Race in New Ways

Screening of an episode from America to Me, a documentary that opens the doors to a high school outside of Chicago, where students and teachers struggle to navigate crucial issues of race, identity, and education. The event will take place on Monday, April 22 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 p.m., at the Monroe County Public Library Auditorium, 303 E. Kirkwood, Bloomington.

A panel discussion will follow the screening featuring students, parents, and educators from the Bloomington community. Byron Turner, vice chairman of the City of Bloomington’s Commission on the Status of Black Males and 2018 MCCSC School Board candidate, will moderate the discussion.

The evening’s one-hour screening of Episode 6: Racial Identity Development is part of the 10-part America to Me docuseries from Steve James (Hoop Dreams) and follows students and faculty through the Oak Park-River Forest High School outside of Chicago to explore racial inequity from a different angle. The film is profound and thoughtful, taking a detailed look at inequality in America through the lens of a storied high school near Chicago.

This event is co-sponsored by the Community Committee on Educational Equity, Indiana Coalition for Public Education – Monroe County, and the IU Community of Teachers.

Poet, activist, and journalist Sandra Hochman and an all-female crew documented and participated in the radical interventions of the Women’s Movement at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. These activists and filmmakers challenged media anchors, including Walter Cronkite, on the limited coverage of African-American Democratic Presidential candidate Shirley Chisholm. At The I Fell: Pedestrian Deposit – Disconnector – Psychic Eminence @ The I Fell Building 415 W. 4th St
Apr 25 @ 8:00 pm

Reverse tension, abrasive composition. The duo of Shannon A. Kennedy and Jonathan Borges is best described as visceral and narrative; informed by elements of experimental sound, harsh noise, musique concrete, neo-classical, dark ambiance and performance art but is not beholden to any one genre. It is best experienced live and in the moment to understand it’s full scope.

PD maintains an adherence to personal integrity and independence — both with live appearances and recordings, which are issued through Monorail Trespassing, the record label Borges has operated for nearly 20 years. Their refusal to play into the corporate re-structuring of the music underground remains a consistent mindset.

Instrumentation consists of physically activated, sculptural instruments made of wood, metal, strings and springs, and gutter electronics.

More info about Pedestrian Deposit here.

D/SC_\\ECT_R is Joshua Schnable working audio into ambient drones via computer, with video projection accompaniment.

More info about Disconnector here.

Psychic Eminence is the duo of Adam Sommer and Ben Myers, an alternate timeline to Lather Sommer Duo in which the purpose is freedom and release rather than tension and turmoil.

Bloomington Restorations, Inc. invites you to the 2019 Fourteenth Annual Daisy Days Plant Sale and Museum Open Day on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, April 28, from 1-4 p.m. Native perennials sourced from Spence Restoration Nursery, since 1998 Indiana’s premier native plant supplier, will be a primary emphasis of the plant sale. The HiStory Book Club continues their 2019 reading list with Mixed Marriage: A Memoir. Remember the book club welcomes everyone, whether they have completed the book or not!

It was the sixties. Everything was changing. People were demanding freedom of every kind. Freedom from racism, from the war in Vietnam, from sexism, from police brutality, from college courses that ignored the achievements of everyone except those of European descent. So, why not, also, the freedom to marry whomever you choose? In 1965, before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the ban on mixed marriages was unconstitutional, in many states it was a crime to marry “outside your race.” And less than 1% of Americans chose to commit that crime. This is the story of how author Janet Cheatham Bell came to defy that ridiculous law.

Counterfeit Madison
counterfeitmadison.bandcamp.com
“It’s hard to understate the dynamic presence Sharon Udoh has become within the Columbus creative community since she moved up from Cincinnati in 2009 and began performing music here under the name Counterfeit Madison. The Nigerian-American renaissance woman has since joined forces with a zillion bands and provided every last one of them with a jolt of electricity, usually via deeply intoned shouts and bellows from the pit of her soul and/or combustible piano mad science combining jazz, classical, gospel, rock, and seemingly every other musical fiber in the universe. Regardless of the context, she is a force of nature. But nothing captures her essence like her own solo material, an inspired convergence of influences and impulses that truly sounds like nothing else.”
