“When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

The political and technological turmoil of the past few years has had unexpected consequences: it’s causing us to ask bigger, deeper, more challenging questions. Like … where is this heading? What really matters? Is there more I should be doing? For TED in 2019, we’re joining that search for deeper meaning.

We’ll be exploring technologies that evoke wonder and tantalize with superhuman powers, mind-bending science that will drive the future as significantly as any politician, the design of cities and other powerful human systems that shape our lives, awe-inspiring, mind-expanding creativity and most of all, the inspiring possibilities that happen when we ask what ideas are truly worth fighting for, worth living for.

Where: Wylie House’s Morton C. Bradley, Jr. Education Center

Description: Join us for an opportunity to make paper and create art with IU faculty member and artist, Laura Post, at the museum’s Morton C. Bradley, Jr. Education Center (next door to the museum). These workshops are part of her Diversity and Biodiversity of Indiana Project sponsored by IU’s Office of the Bicentennial. Three of her completed pieces are on exhibit at the Education Center through the month of April.

Workshop Description:

During this 2-part workshop, participants will learn to identify invasive plants, process them into pulp for papermaking, then make paper. Participants can attend Part 1 or Part 2, or both!

Part 1: Thursday, April 18, 5-7pm

We will examine the characteristics of various invasive plants of South Central Indiana. We will then turn the plants into paper pulp by steaming the bark, scraping it, cooking it, and beating it.

Part 2: Saturday, April 20, 1-4pm

We will use this pulp to make sheets of paper, as it has been done for centuries. We will also explore pulp painting, by combining different colors of plant materials to create designs and images.

The new Daviess-Martin Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA) will host a free wildflower walk and garlic mustard identification/pull Saturday April 20 at 10AM at the Bluffs of Beaver Bend nature preserve. Anyone interested is invited to attend to learn to identify the wide variety of rare native plants growing along the roadway at the base of the bluffs and up into the rocks, as well as the invasive garlic mustard that threatens them. special equipment or clothing will be needed.

Karen Whorrall will lead the walk, which is expected to last about 45 minutes, for any questions contact Karen at

Film Screening: America to Me
Documentary Tackles Race in New Ways

Screening of an episode from America to Me, a documentary that opens the doors to a high school outside of Chicago, where students and teachers struggle to navigate crucial issues of race, identity, and education. The event will take place on Monday, April 22 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 p.m., at the Monroe County Public Library Auditorium, 303 E. Kirkwood, Bloomington.

A panel discussion will follow the screening featuring students, parents, and educators from the Bloomington community. Byron Turner, vice chairman of the City of Bloomington’s Commission on the Status of Black Males and 2018 MCCSC School Board candidate, will moderate the discussion.

The evening’s one-hour screening of Episode 6: Racial Identity Development is part of the 10-part America to Me docuseries from Steve James (Hoop Dreams) and follows students and faculty through the Oak Park-River Forest High School outside of Chicago to explore racial inequity from a different angle. The film is profound and thoughtful, taking a detailed look at inequality in America through the lens of a storied high school near Chicago.

This event is co-sponsored by the Community Committee on Educational Equity, Indiana Coalition for Public Education – Monroe County, and the IU Community of Teachers.

Poet, activist, and journalist Sandra Hochman and an all-female crew documented and participated in the radical interventions of the Women’s Movement at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. These activists and filmmakers challenged media anchors, including Walter Cronkite, on the limited coverage of African-American Democratic Presidential candidate Shirley Chisholm. This rarely screened, recently restored film is a celebration of female filmmaking and feminist political action and includes appearances by Gloria Steinem, Liz Renay, Betty Friedan, Flo Kennedy, Coretta Scott King, Shirley MacLaine, and many others.
