Poet, activist, and journalist Sandra Hochman and an all-female crew documented and participated in the radical interventions of the Women’s Movement at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. These activists and filmmakers challenged media anchors, including Walter Cronkite, on the limited coverage of African-American Democratic Presidential candidate Shirley Chisholm. This rarely screened, recently restored film is a celebration of female filmmaking and feminist political action and includes appearances by Gloria Steinem, Liz Renay, Betty Friedan, Flo Kennedy, Coretta Scott King, Shirley MacLaine, and many others.

About the Artist
Though the six vocalists of Adilei hail from diverse backgrounds, the art of choral polyphonic traditions binds them together. Adilei’s music is rooted in the western Georgian province of Guria, the home to the most intricate and colorful form of Georgian polyphonic folk singing. Gurian song devotes equal attention to all vocal elements to create unique melodies that come together only to diverge again. Guria is also known for its style of Krimanchuli, or a rhythmic yodel, that each artist can alter throughout performances.
For their April meeting, the Monroe County Civil War Roundtable will present a program titled Faces From Gettysburg. Many may be familiar with the Battle of Gettysburg and its aftermath as well as some of the more famous names associated with it – Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, and George Meade to name a few. But in this talk, roundtable president Scott Schroeder will be discussing the battle and its aftermath by examining the stories of some lesser known characters. Characters that are young and old, male and female, soldier and civilian. Some of their stories end tragically and others end happily, but all are interesting in their own way.

The Filmmaker to Filmmaker: Conversations from the Director’s Chair annual program pairs two complementary film directors on stage together, discussing their artistic vision, process, and bodies of work, surrounded by screenings of their films. This year’s program pairs two visionary filmmakers who each have new films in 2018, Alejandra Marquez Abella and Lucrecia Martel.
Alejandra Márquez Abella is a writer/director who was born in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and studied filmmaking at Centre d’Estudis Cinematogràfics de Catalunya in Barcelona. She is currently based in Mexico City and works in film and television. Her first two feature films, Semana Santa (2015) and The Good Girls (2018), both premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Born in Argentina, Lucrecia Martel is considered a master filmmaker in the international film community. Her four feature films have premiered at the world’s top film festivals—Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto, New York, Sundance, and Rotterdam—and retrospectives of her work have been widely exhibited. Martel has served on official film juries and taught masterclasses around the world. Filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar said of her work, “When you discover an auteur so original, mature, and elusive as Lucrecia Martel, you feel as if you’re witnessing a miracle.”
The program is endowed through a gift from Roberta and Jim Sherman, with an Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign Match. This program is additionally supported by the IU Arts and Humanities Council and Mexico Remixed.

On Saturday evening, April 13, 2019, Bloomington Chamber Singers will present two of the great French choral-orchestral works of the 20th century: Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, op. 9, and Francis Poulenc’s Stabat Mater, FP 148.
The Requiem was composed in 1947 at the end of World War II. Like Fauré’s Requiem, the work focuses not on hell and damnation, but instead on images of consolation in the face of loss. The chants of the Roman Catholic Missa pro defunctis (Requiem Mass) form the melodic basis of the work, ancient melodies enriched by gentle harmonies and tender orchestral colors. Duruflé explains: “This Requiem is not an ethereal work which sings of detachment from human concerns. It reflects, in the unchanging form of Christian prayer, the anguish of man faced with the mystery of his final end.”
Poulenc’s Stabat Mater was composed in 1950 in response to the death of his friend, the artist Christian Bérard; he considered writing a Requiem for Bérard, but, after returning to the shrine of the Black Virgin of Rocamadour, Poulenc selected as his text the Stabat Mater, an ancient Latin hymn that reflects on Mary’s sorrow as she witnessed the Crucifixion. The piece, scored for soprano solo, mixed chorus, and orchestra, premiered in 1951 at the Strasbourg Festival. This work won the New York Critics’ Circle Award for Best Choral Work of the year. Poulenc considered it his finest composition.
Don’t miss this rare event performed by Bloomington area musical artists, 55 vocalists and full orchestra.
