Let me be your trans best friend, come, drop in to room 1C at the Monroe County Main Library, ask me ANY question or ton of questions you have about transgender and intersex people. I will answer to the best of my abilities given my 43 years as an intersex trans female and 21 years as an out trans woman. I’d like to especially encourage healthcare workers, human resource people, parents, educators, law enforcement and other first responders, and people of any faith tradition to come by and lay it all out there. I have heard just about everything, and will not be offended or shocked. My goal is to be able to dispell myths and fill in the blanks with honest, direct information and a bit of humour.
Share this with anyone you think may be interested. Come by any time between 6 and 9. It’s a drop-in session, not a lecture. I’ll have some cookies to share, too.

Chicago sound-weaver Jessica Risker has shared a video for “Zero Summer Mind” today, prior to hitting the road on a two-week run of dates up the center of the United States with label mate Caroline Says – watch + share. “Zero Summer Mind” is featured on Jessica’s first album under her own name, I See You Among The Stars, which arrived this spring on Western Vinyl, garnering praise from NPR Music, the Chicago Tribune and Reader. The tour kicks off tomorrow night in Austin, TX and runs through two performances in Chicago, IL (all dates below).
Comprising eight aural vignettes, I See You Among The Stars is a wood-grained, amber-hued world respectfully orbiting influences like Nick Drake, Sibylle Baier, and the softest moments of Broadcast. Paisley fabrics fade beneath an uncovered window, while dust and smoke billow gently through the sunbeams that never fully reach the dark half of the room. The collection of psychedelic folk tunes achieves what the best music in the genre does: pictures with tangible depth, color, and detail painted with only a few well-chosen pigments. There is a perfect thread of quiet despair that renders the playfulness of its surroundings subversive and slightly wicked, making the whole affair psychedelic in the actual sense of the word. Sure, the colors may be brighter, but the shadows are also longer and darker.
I See You Among the Stars is an exemplar of spaced out psych-folk that seeks to convey the intimacy and introspection of a woman going about her simple matters at home, while creating an atmosphere to provide melancholy accompaniment to these very tasks. But the final result is something much more: a polyhedral, exploratory, and mystifying peer into a detailed pop-up storybook that reflects the mind and heart of its luminous creator.
Bloomington’s only gender-based performance open mic. Wanna try drag? Burlesque? Boylesque? Good old-fashioned performance art? NOW’S YOUR CHANCE. All are welcome to participate–just bring your own music and your *fabulous* selves. Who knows? You may end up in a show!

Bloomington Peace Action Coalition Will Hold Nagasaki Memorial Vigil Aug. 9th.
Bloomington Peace Action Coalition announces that it will hold a public vigil to commemorate the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The vigil, to be held on Courthouse Square in Bloomington, will be from 8 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 9th, the 73rd anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki. Seventy thousand people were killed by the bombing itself and radiation sickness over following months and years raised the total to 135,000.
“We chose the Nagasaki anniversary this year because we must resolve that Nagasaki shall be the last time humanity uses these indefensible weapons,” said BPAC Spokesperson David Keppel. “Yet Congress recently approved a $1.2 trillion nuclear weapons escalation to build ‘usable’ nuclear weapons.”
Organizers hope to inspire attendees to do three things: contact Congress, raise the issue in the 2018 campaign, and advocate making Bloomington a nuclear weapons-free city, in compliance with the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons adopted by the United Nations in 2017. The grassroots movement that led to this treaty and that advocates for its implementation, The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (or ICAN), won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.
The vigil will include a benediction by Rabbi Brian Besser of Congregation Beth Shalom Bloomington, flute music performed by Alain Barker of the Jacobs School of Music, poetry read by Antonia Matthew, and remarks by Heather Blair (who is Japanese), David Keppel, and a special guest who will be announced at the event. Organizers hope the event will nourish the spirit as well as stirring people to action.
Co-sponsoring the vigil with Bloomington Peace Action Coalition are Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, the Just Peace Task Force of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington; Bloomington Friends Meeting; and the Campaign for a Just Peace in Palestine/ Israel.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to bring a candle. In event of rain, the event would be moved to the Atrium of the Showers Building (City Hall, 8th and Morton). Everyone is invited to attend this family-friendly event.
For more information, please contact David Keppel. or (812) 272-0597.
