Feb 19 @ 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm

Japanese-American Day of Remembrance: IU and Japanese Americans: Banned Then, Storytellers Today.

On Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the internment of tens of thousands of American citizens of Japanese ancestry. Sharing in the hysteria, the IU Board of Trustees voted on May 9, 1942 to bar the admission of Japanese American students to IU. What is the university’s relationship with this history? Please join us for a discussion of this history with a screening of The Orange Story and excerpts from Seppuku, films both made by fourth-generation Japanese American storytellers. How can stories make a difference?

Bloomington-area folks, feeling helpless and distraught about gun violence (aka mass murder) in our schools? Feel like you need to do more than share FB memes condemning these actions and the people who enable them? I’m currently working with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America to organize a meeting for those of us interested in turning “thoughts and prayers” into “organization and action”! Even if you’ve never considered yourself an activist before, or don’t think you have much to offer…step out of your comfort zone and join us! The MDAGS reps will provide concrete actions that we can take to help the movement!

Heal, a Movie and Presentation by Nancy E. Kalina @ The Venue, 114 S. Grant Bloomington
Feb 20 @ 5:30 pm

On Tuesday eve, February 20th, beginning at 5:30 pm. The Venue will host the movie, Heal, and a following presentation by Nancy E. Kalina, a Certified Martha Beck Life Coach.
Nancy experienced two degenerative hip issues and two surgeries within a six year period. This gave her the opportunity to learn and examine whether or not she could go through injury and illness in a different way, by simply changing her perspective. Nancy tells her story of changing her perceptions in her Ebook entitled The Power of Possibility: Achieving Whole-Body Wellness Through Injury and Illness.
Within the movie Heal you can discover that your thoughts, beliefs, and emotions have a huge impact on your health and your ability to heal. The latest science reveals that we are not victims of unchangeable genes, nor should we buy into a scary prognosis. The fact is we have more power over our health and life than we have been taught to believe.
After the viewing, Nancy will discuss and share her new understanding of the miraculous nature of the human body and the extraordinary healer within.

Their clans have been bitter enemies for centuries—but Lucia of Lammermoor is desperate to marry her beloved Edgardo of Ravenswood, and her nefarious brother will do anything to keep them apart.

Tricked into believing Edgardo has been unfaithful, Lucia is destroyed—driven to madness and murder in Donizetti’s riveting romance set in seventeenth-century Scotland. The electrifying Mad Scene, the extraordinary sextet in which the secrets and yearnings of all the major characters are revealed, the meltingly soulful love duet—Lucia’s matchless music and riveting drama make it one of the most famous operas of all time.
