Art Historian Diane Pelrine will present a free, public lecture “Skin as Canvas: A Global View of Tattooing” in FA room 102. Part of Wang Toon’s quasi-comical Taiwan trilogy, Banana Paradise follows the path of a young man named Door Latch and his friend who move to Taiwan in 1949, believing it to be a land of opportunity. Door Latch meets a woman who he marries, taking on her late husband’s name and diploma to help him find employment and help care for her son. This eventually leads to complicated, embarrassing, and comedic situations as he wants to travel back to Mainland China decades later. In Mandarin with English subtitles. The African American Dance Company 19th Annual Dance Workshop exposes participants to dance from the perspectives of African American culture and the broader African Diaspora through master classes, panel discussions, and enlightening dialogue. The workshop will include dance classes exploring West Indian/Jamaican, Afro-Cuban traditional and popular, West African styles, Vogue, and Contemporary Modern dance.

BPP is proud to announce its third show of the 2016-17 Mainstage Season, Row After Rowby Jessica Dickey. Row After Row is part of BPP’s Off Broadway/On-Ninth series. The production is directed by David Anspaugh, director of the award-winning films Hoosiers and Rudy. Row After Row is Anspaugh’s second production at BPP. He directed 2014’s Woodward/Newman Drama Award winner Ugly Lies the Bone by Lindsay Ferrentino.
David Anspaugh is thrilled to be directing again at BPP. “Exploring and telling relevant stories has always been important to me as a director. I believe this script – although about Civil War re-enactment – mirrors some of the struggles we’re trying to navigate in our current political and cultural landscape. I think is it a very timely and significant story.”
In Row After Row, historical accuracy is paramount to Cal and Tom, two hardcore Civil War re-enactors, fresh off their latest Gettysburg battle. But their accuracy is compromised when they’re joined by a soldier with a less than authentic confederate uniform… and the wrong gender. Straddling 1863 and today, Row After Row is a dark comedy about choosing your cause and finding your courage.
David Sheehan, (Home, Thirty Day Mourning Period, You Remind Me of You) is the show’s Assistant Director. “What’s striking about Row After Row is how this little play about re-enacting history manages to march completely in step with current events. Without stooping to partisan bickering, Row manages to create a meaningful, dramatic but often civil, dialogue about political correctness and especially the role of women in our national trajectory that brings to mind the tavern conversations that helped to shape this country,” he says.

For the month of February Gather is overjoyed towelcome small business owner Ryan Woods to our Gallery Wall. For those of you unfamiliar with Mr Ryan Woods – he and his partner Toby own and operate vegan/veg friendly restaurant The Owlery, in downtown Bloomington. Ryan is also an esteemed painter and musician.
For this work featured at Gather for the month of February you’re sure to see his personality shine through in his mixed media pieces. Each piece emotes a very specific time and place, holding us here in this difficult time in our history. Ryan Woods is an artist, musician and restaurant owner currently living in Bloomington,IN. He has a BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati in painting.
Visit us on First Friday for Gallery Walk in February, on February 3rd from 5-8pm for our opening reception to meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments. Works will remain on display at Gather throughout the month of February (Gather hours: Tues – Fri 11-5, Sat 10-5, Sun 12-4).

Joel Washington is a self-taught, Indiana-based artist. His one-of-a-kind acrylic paintings have been showcased in the Indiana State Museum and the U.S.
Embassy in Thailand.
He began his journey as an artist after seeing the Beatles’ movie “Yellow Submarine” when he was a child. Along with the Beatles, Joel counts jazz, vintage Disney animation, comic books, classic films and the art of the 1960s among his influences
Lizzy Salvaggio recently graduated with a BFA in Printmaking and Digital Art from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee. Lizzy is a practicing printmaker, bookmaker, and illustrator who enjoys creating visual representations of stories old and new.
“Nature is all around us and has been influencing culture, art, and folklore for centuries. This show is an exploration of fairy tales and nature, and how they work together to create a narrative. They can create their own story, become the catalyst for the plot, or are innocent bystanders that are used for good or evil.”
Anabel, a University of New Mexico alumna, recently visited New Mexico to spend a week painting with renowned Master Pastelist Albert Handell. The paintings derive from her journey. Anabel is a juried member of the Indiana Artisans Project and the Hoosier Salon. She is a member of Hoosier Artist gallery in Nashville, Indiana.
Love at First Friday comes around again this year with Levi McGranahan, a designer and artist that uses a combination of traditional and digital techniques to create work that is simple and playful with an emphasis on bold color, contrast, and movement. Deep Cuts is a collection of abstract works created over the course of the past year. Most of the pieces were made in a largely improvised and stream of consciousness manner focusing on the relationships between shapes and the space they occupy.

Description: Larry Spears’s personal involvement in creating pottery spans over forty years of working with clay. Basically, he makes pots. Larry still feels that it is one of the most expressive art mediums. The shapes he uses have been evolving over the past four decades. He continually analyzes and formulates constant changes when developing his ever-expanding glaze palette. Many of his pieces are sprayed, dipped, brushed, spattered and layered with various glazes and slips. The majority of Larry’s work is fired in reduction in a gas kiln to cone 9.
The work for the exhibit “Vessels”, includes many new pieces with hand built appendages made from clay and various other elements. The aim of these designs is to create contrasting color and surface elements that work in harmony with the form.

Abegunde is a Memory Keeper who chooses to forget that words have limits. She chooses to remember – and live by – the words of a 5th grade student: Poetry can change the world. As a result, she spends her days and dream time chanting silenced memories into spoken histories. On the weekdays, when she isn’t birthing new words out of sound and images, she shapeshifts into an IU professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies and Graduate Mentoring Center director.
Susan Amis is a writer and aspiring Limnologist from Minneapolis, MN currently pursuing her MFA at Indiana University. She enjoys poetry quite a bit.
Emily Corwin is an MFA candidate in poetry at Indiana University-Bloomington and the Poetry Editor for Indiana Review. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Gigantic Sequins, glitterMOB, Hobart, smoking glue gun, and Word Riot. Her chapbook My Tall Handsome was recently published through Brain Mill Press. JL Kato‘s poetry collection, Shadows Set in Concrete, chronicles the life of a Japanese immigrant in Indiana. It was selected the 2011 Best Book of Indiana by Indiana Center for the Book. Kato’s poems have appeared in Paterson Literary Review, Tipton Poetry Journal, Raintown Review, and So It Goes. He is poetry editor of Flying Island, the online literary journal of the Indiana Writers Center. He also serves as president of Brick Street Poetry Inc., a nonprofit group that advocates for poetry in public places.
Greg Buse and Rebecca Keith form American Standard— a folk duo that enjoys singing everything from contemporary indie folk to classic tunes from the ‘70s and ‘80s to original material written by Greg. Although they met in 2002, they didn’t start performing together until 2013. Both have positions at Indiana University, families, and other activities that keep them busy, but one day plan to take their music on the road.

Says You! is a long-running, nationally broadcasted show on air on WFIU Saturday mornings and one of the most challenging shows on Public Radio. This public radio game show of bluff and bluster, words and whimsy is coming to the Playhouse on Friday, February 3 for 2 live tapings.
What is Says You?…a simple game with words played by two teams in front of live, enthusiastic audiences from coast to coast. For two decades, they have offered listeners the best quips, quotes and questions that public radio has to offer, all scored to the rhythms of musical guest performers.
If you’re new to the show, we invite you to join their panelists as host Barry Nolan challenges them with the most interesting and difficult questions you’re likely to hear on the airwaves. Their motto: It’s not important to know the answers…it’s only important to like the answers.

The public is invited to a League of Women Voters Legislative Update on Saturday, February 4, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., in the Bloomington City Council Chambers. State legislators representing Monroe County will discuss developments in the Indiana General Assembly and will respond to audience questions and concerns.
This is the second of five planned Legislative Updates sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Bloomington-Monroe County. All updates will be held in the Bloomington City Council Chambers, Showers Building, 401 N. Morton St. and are free and open to the public. They will be taped by Cable Access Television Services through the Monroe County Public Library and will be replayed by CATS throughout the current legislative session.
Subsequent Legislative Updates are scheduled for March 4, April 8, and May 13.

Get your puppy outside for the day! This event will last from 9am-4pm. Sign-up and get map/points sheet at the Brown County State Park Nature Center from 9am-12pm. Turn in your Data sheet by 4:00pm at the Nature Center. Winners announced at 4:30pm.
Points with Codes will be located along select trails and throughout the park at unique park locations. Collect points throughout the day, the person with the highest score wins! The African American Dance Company 19th Annual Dance Workshop exposes participants to dance from the perspectives of African American culture and the broader African Diaspora through master classes, panel discussions, and enlightening dialogue. The workshop will include dance classes exploring West Indian/Jamaican, Afro-Cuban traditional and popular, West African styles, Vogue, and Contemporary Modern dance.
No previous dance experience is required! (If taking a Vogue class, feel free to bring a heel, preferably with ankle support; no wedges/platforms.)

BPP is proud to announce its third show of the 2016-17 Mainstage Season, Row After Rowby Jessica Dickey. Row After Row is part of BPP’s Off Broadway/On-Ninth series. The production is directed by David Anspaugh, director of the award-winning films Hoosiers and Rudy. Row After Row is Anspaugh’s second production at BPP. He directed 2014’s Woodward/Newman Drama Award winner Ugly Lies the Bone by Lindsay Ferrentino.
David Anspaugh is thrilled to be directing again at BPP. “Exploring and telling relevant stories has always been important to me as a director. I believe this script – although about Civil War re-enactment – mirrors some of the struggles we’re trying to navigate in our current political and cultural landscape. I think is it a very timely and significant story.”
In Row After Row, historical accuracy is paramount to Cal and Tom, two hardcore Civil War re-enactors, fresh off their latest Gettysburg battle. But their accuracy is compromised when they’re joined by a soldier with a less than authentic confederate uniform… and the wrong gender. Straddling 1863 and today, Row After Row is a dark comedy about choosing your cause and finding your courage.
David Sheehan, (Home, Thirty Day Mourning Period, You Remind Me of You) is the show’s Assistant Director. “What’s striking about Row After Row is how this little play about re-enacting history manages to march completely in step with current events. Without stooping to partisan bickering, Row manages to create a meaningful, dramatic but often civil, dialogue about political correctness and especially the role of women in our national trajectory that brings to mind the tavern conversations that helped to shape this country,” he says.
