Salaam has delighted audiences for years with its expansive repertoire of Middle Eastern and North African music. Salaam is true to the traditions, informing the uninitiated, and evoking nostalgia in listeners who are familiar with the art form. What sets Salaam apart is the versatility of its musicians, whose deep knowledge of Eastern and Western styles gives them the flexibility to move effortlessly between genres. Iraqi-American band leader Dena El Saffar’s compositions take advantage her own eclectic musical upbringing to create a sound rooted in maqam (the modal system used throughout the Middle East), with tasteful forays into Latin, African, Balkan, Rock, Blues, and Classical styles .

Art Historian Diane Pelrine will present a free, public lecture “Skin as Canvas: A Global View of Tattooing” in FA room 102. Part of Wang Toon’s quasi-comical Taiwan trilogy, Banana Paradise follows the path of a young man named Door Latch and his friend who move to Taiwan in 1949, believing it to be a land of opportunity. Door Latch meets a woman who he marries, taking on her late husband’s name and diploma to help him find employment and help care for her son. This eventually leads to complicated, embarrassing, and comedic situations as he wants to travel back to Mainland China decades later. In Mandarin with English subtitles. On Tuesday eve, January 31st, beginning at 5:30p.m. The Venue will host a presentation by Michelle Martin-Colman, a Safe & Civil Colleague Facilitator, on going “From Fit to Fat in Five, with someone who did it !!! Did it take you five weeks, five months, or five years to put on extra pounds you suddenly can’t get rid of? Come exchange stories and talk about how weird it feels to change so dramatically inside and outside, and most importantly “WHY”, and what you’ll do next for that self-loving month of February. This is an exploration, NOT a sales pitch. We’ll explore feelings, observations, and reasons why, in an atmosphere of agreed confidentiality, welcoming good spirits, with no inquiring press or photographers allowed.

The African American Dance Company 19th Annual Dance Workshop exposes participants to dance from the perspectives of African American culture and the broader African Diaspora through master classes, panel discussions, and enlightening dialogue. The workshop will include dance classes exploring West Indian/Jamaican, Afro-Cuban traditional and popular, West African styles, Vogue, and Contemporary Modern dance.
No previous dance experience is required! (If taking a Vogue class, feel free to bring a heel, preferably with ankle support; no wedges/platforms.)

BPP is proud to announce its third show of the 2016-17 Mainstage Season, Row After Rowby Jessica Dickey. Row After Row is part of BPP’s Off Broadway/On-Ninth series. The production is directed by David Anspaugh, director of the award-winning films Hoosiers and Rudy. Row After Row is Anspaugh’s second production at BPP. He directed 2014’s Woodward/Newman Drama Award winner Ugly Lies the Bone by Lindsay Ferrentino.
David Anspaugh is thrilled to be directing again at BPP. “Exploring and telling relevant stories has always been important to me as a director. I believe this script – although about Civil War re-enactment – mirrors some of the struggles we’re trying to navigate in our current political and cultural landscape. I think is it a very timely and significant story.”
In Row After Row, historical accuracy is paramount to Cal and Tom, two hardcore Civil War re-enactors, fresh off their latest Gettysburg battle. But their accuracy is compromised when they’re joined by a soldier with a less than authentic confederate uniform… and the wrong gender. Straddling 1863 and today, Row After Row is a dark comedy about choosing your cause and finding your courage.
David Sheehan, (Home, Thirty Day Mourning Period, You Remind Me of You) is the show’s Assistant Director. “What’s striking about Row After Row is how this little play about re-enacting history manages to march completely in step with current events. Without stooping to partisan bickering, Row manages to create a meaningful, dramatic but often civil, dialogue about political correctness and especially the role of women in our national trajectory that brings to mind the tavern conversations that helped to shape this country,” he says.

For the month of February Gather is overjoyed towelcome small business owner Ryan Woods to our Gallery Wall. For those of you unfamiliar with Mr Ryan Woods – he and his partner Toby own and operate vegan/veg friendly restaurant The Owlery, in downtown Bloomington. Ryan is also an esteemed painter and musician.
For this work featured at Gather for the month of February you’re sure to see his personality shine through in his mixed media pieces. Each piece emotes a very specific time and place, holding us here in this difficult time in our history. Ryan Woods is an artist, musician and restaurant owner currently living in Bloomington,IN. He has a BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati in painting.
Visit us on First Friday for Gallery Walk in February, on February 3rd from 5-8pm for our opening reception to meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments. Works will remain on display at Gather throughout the month of February (Gather hours: Tues – Fri 11-5, Sat 10-5, Sun 12-4).

Joel Washington is a self-taught, Indiana-based artist. His one-of-a-kind acrylic paintings have been showcased in the Indiana State Museum and the U.S.
Embassy in Thailand.
He began his journey as an artist after seeing the Beatles’ movie “Yellow Submarine” when he was a child. Along with the Beatles, Joel counts jazz, vintage Disney animation, comic books, classic films and the art of the 1960s among his influences
Lizzy Salvaggio recently graduated with a BFA in Printmaking and Digital Art from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee. Lizzy is a practicing printmaker, bookmaker, and illustrator who enjoys creating visual representations of stories old and new.
“Nature is all around us and has been influencing culture, art, and folklore for centuries. This show is an exploration of fairy tales and nature, and how they work together to create a narrative. They can create their own story, become the catalyst for the plot, or are innocent bystanders that are used for good or evil.”
Anabel, a University of New Mexico alumna, recently visited New Mexico to spend a week painting with renowned Master Pastelist Albert Handell. The paintings derive from her journey. Anabel is a juried member of the Indiana Artisans Project and the Hoosier Salon. She is a member of Hoosier Artist gallery in Nashville, Indiana.
Love at First Friday comes around again this year with Levi McGranahan, a designer and artist that uses a combination of traditional and digital techniques to create work that is simple and playful with an emphasis on bold color, contrast, and movement. Deep Cuts is a collection of abstract works created over the course of the past year. Most of the pieces were made in a largely improvised and stream of consciousness manner focusing on the relationships between shapes and the space they occupy.

Description: Larry Spears’s personal involvement in creating pottery spans over forty years of working with clay. Basically, he makes pots. Larry still feels that it is one of the most expressive art mediums. The shapes he uses have been evolving over the past four decades. He continually analyzes and formulates constant changes when developing his ever-expanding glaze palette. Many of his pieces are sprayed, dipped, brushed, spattered and layered with various glazes and slips. The majority of Larry’s work is fired in reduction in a gas kiln to cone 9.
The work for the exhibit “Vessels”, includes many new pieces with hand built appendages made from clay and various other elements. The aim of these designs is to create contrasting color and surface elements that work in harmony with the form.

For Gallery Walk , The Vault at Gallery Mortgage is pleased to offer a unique opportunity.
