Bus System Changes: The Future Is Electric

Play

Residents of Tulip Tree Apartments were not happy when their Bloomington Transit bus stop was removed this past fall. Now their only option is a campus bus, on a route that takes way longer. You might call this change the price of progress: the new electric buses have their battery packs on top of the buses, making them too tall to fit under the 10th Street railroad overpass. Bloomington Transit leaders Bryan Fyalkowski and Shelley Strimaitis explain how they worked with the Indiana University bus system to make sure Tulip Tree was covered. We also hear about other BT changes:
– how new route management software enabled “BLink” demand-response public transportation
– free shuttles during downtown events
– the upcoming addition of a 60-foot-long “articulated” bus (extra long and bendable in the middle)
– the 16 new electric buses added last year toward a goal of a 100% electric fleet by 2050
