Today on Bring It On!, hosts, Clarence Boone and Liz Mitchell, spend the hour with David Gudaitis, Alan Backler, and Larry Laswell to preview the upcoming documentary, Reviving the West Baden Colored Church: A Labor of Love. It tells the story of the First Baptist (Colored) Church in West Baden Springs, Indiana, from its founding and years of growth to its decline and rebirth. It also talks about the people who were involved in each stage of the church’s development.

David Gudaitis, Alan Backler, and Larry Laswell are here today telling this story because it helps preserve the legacy of the large African American community that lived in French Lick and West Baden Springs, who had worked at the local resorts, beginning in the late 19th century. Also, the documentary tells the story of how the church, which was the cornerstone of the local African American community, survived and flourished, despite the great depression, floods, declining membership, and racial conflicts.
Finally, Reviving the West Baden Colored Church chronicles the challenges of the extensive restoration that took place over five years leading to its revival. After this screening, directors Elizabeth Michell and David Gudaitis and volunteers who helped restore the church will share insights and answer questions.
Reviving the West Baden Colored Church documentary is set to air at 4 p.m., on Sunday, August 20th at the West Baden Hotel, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 27th at the Monroe County Public Library. Both showings are free to the public.
