Animal Shelter Overcrowding Crisis

Play

“We need help. Now.”

That’s a direct quote from the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter, posting on Facebook earlier this week about the overcrowding crisis at the shelter. It’s not a new problem, but right now it’s a really bad one – especially for the dogs. More pooches are coming in than going out, the kennels are full, and the shelter is out of space. Sometimes they line the halls with portable kennels and fill those up too. They need adopters. They need foster volunteers. The need is urgent. We hear from Emily Herr, City of Bloomington Animal Shelter outreach coordinator, and Kiersten Thummel, a longtime superstar foster volunteer, as they try desperately to keep stray and abandoned animals safe…and alive. The Bloomington shelter strives to be a “no-kill” shelter, but because they take in all animals, even ones from other counties, sometimes tough choices have to be made if the community cannot help.

Today’s feature story on the overcrowding crisis at the Bloomington Animal Shelter was produced by Lily Welch in partnership with The Media School at Indiana University. Theme music by Daidalosone
