The Boston Gazette coined the term “gerrymandering,” in 1812, after then-Governor of Massachusetts, Elbridge Gerry. As League of Women Voter of Bloomington-Monroe County President Ann Birch explains, Gerry infamously signed a bill that redistricted the state, creating a political district map that was so curvy and complex that people said it looked like a giant salamander—a Gerrymander!
