Host Dave Stewart welcomes Dr. Altalf Hussain, a pediatrician from Kashmir who is visiting Bloomington. They discuss how they met in a book club that was discussing “The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf”. They also discuss the practice of pediatrics, and the notion of planning for the future. The beauty, strategic location, and history of Kashmir make a compelling topic, and they discuss the history of Kashmir from long ago up to the present-day conflict over the control of Kashmir. At present, India controls 2/3 of Kashmir, and Pakistan controls 1/3 of Kashmir, and the “Line of Control” is disputed and militarily contested. Dr. Altalf presents a compelling narrative concluding that the conflict in Kashmir is not between two religions, but a peoples’ struggle for independence and the right to self-determination, which Dr. Altalf argues is a birthright for every human being.
