County Commissioners Tackle Tornado Recovery and Infrastructure Updates

The Monroe County Commissioners met on June 12th. During public comment Executive Director of People and Animal Learning Services Christine Herring gave the commissioners an update on their recovery efforts, following the tornado damage on May 16th.
Commissioner Judy Madeira spoke in support of PALS, saying that it provides a unique resource to the community.
Also speaking on tornado damage, U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Natural Disaster Recovery and Resilience, Public Affairs Specialist, Steven Clark shared information opportunities for physical disaster loans for people affected by the tornado damage.
Later in the meeting, Highway Department Director Lisa Ridge asked the commissioners to approve two contracts with E and B paving for road repaving projects.
The commissioners approved the two contracts unanimously. She also asked them to approve a contract to replace a bridge located on Rhorer Road. Ridge explained that the project isn’t scheduled to begin construction until 2026.
The contract was approved unanimously. The Monroe County Commissioners will meet again on June 26th.

On Saturday, a large crowd gathered at the Monroe County Courthouse Square for the “No Kings” protest. Organized in response to what participants describe as authoritarian overreach by the Trump administration, the rally drew hundreds of community members calling for democratic accountability and human rights protections. In today’s feature report, WFHB Correspondent Ella Cummings spoke with several organizers and community members who spoke out against the current administration – from immigration enforcement to foreign policy. We now turn to a collection of interviews from the protest on the WFHB Local News.
Activate: Bloomington Community Bike Project Offers Free Bicycles for Volunteer Work

Having a form of transportation is essential to making your city a home, but affording a car or even a bicycle can be a challenge for under-resourced individuals. At the Bloomington Community Bike Project you can buy one with sweat equity – volunteering in the shop instead of paying money. Hugh Farrell is on the board at the Community Bike Project.
