Ellettsville Town Council

At the Ellettsville Town Council meeting on November 25th, the council addressed a resolution to use money from the ARPA funds for a tree mitigation project. The total cost was estimated to be about twelve thousand three hundred and sixty nine dollars. The resolution would plant approximately 500 trees. Town Manager Mike Farmer explained more about what the project would entail.

The council unanimously approved the resolution. The project is set to take place next spring. Then, the council heard Ordinance 2024-30 to Amend Section 33.21 of the Town Code to create the Director of Public Works job position. Town Manager Mike Farmer outlined the request.

Council Member Pamela Samples expressed concern that they haven’t prioritized the budget for the police department.

Town Manager Mike Farmer responded that they have been focusing on hiring more police and fire department staff members for the last two years.

Utilities Director Jeff Farmer pointed out that they have different revenue streams and the funds cannot be used to hire police officers.

Samples said that with Ellettsville growing all the way to Spencer, they will need more officers. She asked that they include that in the budget next year.
Council Member Scott Oldham added that the police and fire do need more funding, but that they need to retain all members of the town’s staff.

Council Member William Ellis added that their plans to retain police officers and firefighters, have been helping.

The council asked a variety of clarifying questions about the position and the pay. The ordinance would make the Part Time Parks Director a Public Works employee as well and increase the existing temporary full time position from 9 months to 12 months. The council approved the ordinance unanimously. The Ellettsville Town Council will meet again on December 9th.
