In today’s edition of Bring It On!, hosts, Clarence Boone and Liz Mitchell spend the hour with Leon Bates, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Pan African Studies, at the University of Louisville, KY. He focuses on Urban History (i.e. Education, Housing, Labor, Medicine, Policing, Violence), and the Intersection of Race. Today he explores the life and times of Lt. Col. Joseph H. Ward (1872-1956).

Ward was an African American surgeon, hospital administrator, and World War I veteran. Ward established and operated a hospital for black patients when they were barred from treatment elsewhere. He was a medical trailblazer and early American Legion member whose achievements – decades before the civil-rights movement – have been largely forgotten.
