On February 10th, Dr. Janie Cole from the Centre for African Studies at the University of Cape Town SACM came to Indiana University to speak about studying music in Apartheid South Africa. Dr. Cole is the founder and executive director of Music Beyond Borders, “an organization dedicated to research, cultural-heritage preservation, publications, and film documentaries in which crimes against humanity and socio-political conditions of repression, violence, protest, and freedom are critical.” Dr. Cole came to discuss her research, along with the documentary that she is creating entitled “Keeping Time: The Story of Music in the Apartheid Prisons.” We begin today’s episode with Susan Farringtinos introducing the lecture.
