The City of Bloomington today commemorated the tragic events of September 11, 2001, with a ceremony held on Showers Plaza outside City Hall. Local officials and emergency responders spoke to the significance of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon to the country and our own community. In this WFHB radio exclusive, listen for the tolling of the bells, a fire department tradition going back to the years before modern radio communications existed. Fire alarm boxes assigned a certain number would ring that number of times when a person pulled the fire alarm. Firefighters memorized all the box numbers and would respond. If a firefighter was killed in the line of duty, fire dispatch would ring the bell in a specific pattern, letting everyone in the department know that a firefighter had just lost their life in the line of duty.
