Injustices Suffered by American Women in a Broken Healthcare System

Hoosiers across the state took part in dozens of meetings this weekend to set in place plans to move forward the President’s plan for health insurance reform. Organizing for America is the Democratic National Committee’s grassroots project to support Obama’s agenda. The OFA meeting yesterday in Bloomington focused on the need for women in particular to get real reform. According to the National Women’s Law Center, Indiana women earn just 72 cents for every dollar men earn, yet women depend on healthcare providers more than men, in part due to reproductive health needs. Insurers in Indiana are allowed to consider gender when setting premium rates, and women are often charged more for the exact same coverage. Indiana insurers can also exclude women for pre-existing conditions like having had a C-section birth. 29% of all 2006 Indiana births were by C-section, which means tens of thousands of women could face coverage blackouts because of this discrimination. As we go on-location to City Hall we hear from OFA organizer Jay Plant, but first city clerk Regina Moore gets personal on the injustices suffered by American women in a broken healthcare system in this WFHB exclusive.
