THE BICENTENNIAL JOURNAL
African-American baseball player George Shively was born as the son of a slave and buried in Bloomington’s Rose Hill Cemetery, in 1962. Shively grew up in Bloomington, but it wasn’t until 2015 that his unmarked grave was given a fitting monument for one of Monroe County’s most celebrated athletes. Bob Hammel tells George Shively’s story on this week’s edition of The Bicentennial Journal—looking back on 200 years of history in South Central Indiana.
