Bring It On! – November 30, 2020: IU Professors Talk about Black Theater and Post-Trump Civil Rights

Play

Today’s edition of Bring It On! is divided into two parts.

In Part 1, hosts Clarence Boone and William Hosea share their hosting duties with Vernon William, who is a playwright and organizer of the Onyx Fest, a festival for Black playwrights. They welcome Professor Ansley Valentine, Associate Professor of Theater, Drama, and Contemporary Dance at Indiana University, to discuss the state of black theatre and the plays that both Vernon William and Professor Valentine have recently produced.

Professor Valentine has recently produced a one-woman play, starring Elizabeth Stanley, called Big Breath, at the Alley Theatre in Buffalo, which centers on the social and psychological challenges of singleton life in the age of Covid-19. The entirety of the play’s run occurred on the internet. Right now he is also doing pre-production work on his next play, Mother See.

Vernon Willaims has recently premiered Being Black at 2020’s Onyx Fest in Indianapolis this October, which is a short play that presents a series of vignettes on what it is like to be black in America today, especially in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. Williams also wrote True Colors, a play the explores issues of race through reactions to the re-election of President Barack Obama.

In Part Two, hosts Clarence Boone and William Hosea explore with Dr. Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, Professor of Law at IU,  issues of race and the anticipated challenges ahead in post-Trump America with former Vice-President Joseph Biden now as its U.S. President-Elect. Dr. Fuentes-Rohwer teaches and writes about civil rights with a focus on Constitutional Law, Reconstruction, and Voting Rights.
